He is taking the position that the draft post 1955 is not needed. History tells us otherwise as we had a draft for Vietnam. Thus, a draft has been needed since 1955. | |||

So, we lost the Vietnam war, right? Where did the nation go? That was not an existential threat to the US. The issue about fighting in Vietnam was not existential to the country. Yes, we had a draft in Vietnam. I suppose that fighting another unpopular war against a proxy might require it again. However, Vietnam while a proxy war (like Afghanistan for the USSR, and later for us, like Iraq, and now like Ukraine) was not existential and the folks who served in it were not treated well. Fundamentally, how long do you think the GWOT would have lasted if we would have instituted a draft to fight it? | |||

If you define loosing a war as the use of force upon another political entity to force that entity to abandon a political course, yes we lost. The point is a draft post 1955 was necessary. All it would take is Russia to trigger a war by NATO. | |||
