But we had a defeat after 1955. That observation is not accurate.

re-read doc's post -- he didn't say DEFEAT after 1955, he said NEEDED

Instituting a draft would require some sort of admission that we are facing an existential threat as a nation.

Existential threats to us in this age of nuclear weapons are going to be resolved quickly with extreme violence before we could draft and train troops, and then they would be targeted by strategic weapons.

Until we can defeat WMD’s or more precisely, their delivery, numbers of troops have little to do with a military existential threat.

Essentially we haven’t needed a draft since 1955, once the USSR developed enough strategic weapons for MAD to come in to play.

He is taking the position that the draft post 1955 is not needed. History tells us otherwise as we had a draft for Vietnam.

Thus, a draft has been needed since 1955.

So, we lost the Vietnam war, right?

Where did the nation go?

That was not an existential threat to the US.

The issue about fighting in Vietnam was not existential to the country. Yes, we had a draft in Vietnam. I suppose that fighting another unpopular war against a proxy might require it again. However, Vietnam while a proxy war (like Afghanistan for the USSR, and later for us, like Iraq, and now like Ukraine) was not existential and the folks who served in it were not treated well.

Fundamentally, how long do you think the GWOT would have lasted if we would have instituted a draft to fight it?

If you define loosing a war as the use of force upon another political entity to force that entity to abandon a political course, yes we lost.

The point is a draft post 1955 was necessary.

All it would take is Russia to trigger a war by NATO.
