I have witnessed some amazing liberalization journeys take place here for some I never would have imagined over the last 17 years.

I am never ceased to be amazed today at who shows up loosely throwing the “fascism/fascist” term around. 2020

What's even more amazing are the folks here today who actually support fascist-like policies here in the US akin to those that gave rise to the Nazi movement in Germany.

I don't think you understand what the term means. Here are a few early warning signs. See if they look familiar to you.

Powerful and continuing nationalism
Disdain for human rights
Identification of enemies as a unifying cause
Rampant sexism
Controlled mass media
Obsession with national security
Religion and government intertwined
Corporate power protected
Labor power suppressed
Disdain for intellectual and the arts
Obsession with crime and punishment
Rampant cronyism and corruption

Sounds like......uhh.....MAGA trumptards?

The "journey" is thanks to you and others like bluefish. It took a while. In part the journey is because you are still amazed and in denial - we don't "loosely" throw the term fascist around. We're serious. You are among those who are loose about it.

Can you imagine a candidate, Trump for example or Desantis owning/claiming to be the Right's fascist candidate? They are not going to own it any more that their supporters are going to.

They will never own it, even when fully matured. Only history will tell the tale when it has failed, and all the collateral damage along with it.

As I recall Hitler never identified as a fascist.

I don't think you understand what the term means. Here are a few early warning signs. See if they look familiar to you.

I understand very well and it starts with a strong dictator…the right would fight to the death to prevent that.

Powerful and continuing nationalism

When I was a kid that was a near universal trait among Americans…should still be today.

Disdain for human rights

Only pertains to conservative Republicans in your dreams.

Identification of enemies as a unifying cause

More of a trait of the left or at least universal in USA.

Rampant sexism

Only pertains to conservative Republicans in your dreams.

Controlled mass media

Only pertains to conservative Republicans in your dreams.

Obsession with national security

When I was a kid that was a near universal trait among Americans…should still be today.

Religion and government intertwined

Not intertwined per se but “freedom OF religion NOT FROM religion…as the Founders intended.

Corporate power protected

Corporations built America and won WWII…we need them strong.

Labor power suppressed

Only pertains to conservative Republicans in your dreams.

Disdain for intellectual and the arts

Only pertains to conservative Republicans in your dreams.

Obsession with crime and punishment

When I was a kid that was a near universal trait among Americans…should still be today.

Rampant cronyism and corruption

The crater is a microcosm of our entire culture in the US. We are people dug into our ideological trenches with a no-man's land in between. I have been around this site a long time and I can truthfully say prior to Obama it wasn't like this. Bush and Cheney were awful with what they did and the crater reflected it but not until Barry came along did it go downhill with such speed. And here we are. It will not be repaired and we will continue to Balkanize. In a moment the usual suspects will be along with their responses but I think my summary is accurate. History will one day recognize Obo as the moment the US began to walk down the dark cellar stairs.

Presuppositionists will never acknowledge their alt-reality is not reality any more than they will acknowledge that Christian Nationalism is a form of fascism.

You live within reality. It's all around you. You are surrounded by it.

Reality - resistance is futile, and attempts to do so lead to the conditions of the country today, which we all have to suffer with.

While I appreciated the premise of this thread, and what happened in history, we are more dealing with what's happening today. Patriotism somehow has morphed, and while claiming it a lot of happenings aren't healthy.

Here's something that happened yesterday, Tuesday June 6, 2023.

Look where the violence comes from. Look what their motives are. Who is using the American flag for justifications? Which side is akin to fascism?

Violence breaks out at US school over recognition of Pride month
Story by Verity Bowman • 3h ago

The board was assessing how schools should teach gender and sexuality.

Fighting broke out around an hour into the debate on an agenda item calling for recognition of June as Pride month, which was unanimously approved later in the evening.

One attendee, who said she had a child graduating from a GUSD school on Wednesday, called the protests “heartbreaking”.

“This is a great community, my son has received a great education here,” she told the Los Angeles Times.

Others expressed anger at the board’s policies.

“I’m here on the side of parents who want to keep the focus in schools on academics rather than on sexual orientation,” Belissa Cohen said.

Board meetings have seen protesters gather outside for several weeks.

“This is about, specifically, gender ideology being put upon and thrust upon children at Glendale Unified,” Jordan Henry, who is running for Glendale City Council, told the Los Angeles Times.

On Monday, the Glendale school released a statement in response to the criticism.

“Recently, intentional and harmful disinformation has been circulating about what is being taught in our district and the ways we serve our students,” they said.

“This includes disinformation about LGBTQIA+ curriculum, sex education, and supporting transgender and gender nonconforming youth.”

US judge blocks Florida ban on trans minor care, says ‘gender identity is real’
Updated: Jun. 07, 2023, 6:45 a.m.|Published: Jun. 07, 2023, 6:44 a.m.

Judge Robert Hinkle issued a preliminary injunction

A federal judge temporarily blocked portions of a new Florida law championed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, saying in a Tuesday ruling that gender identity is real and the state has no rational basis for denying patients treatment.

“Gender identity is real. The record makes this clear,” Hinkle said, adding that even a witness for the state agreed.

Transgender medical care for minors is increasingly under attack — Florida is among 19 states that have enacted laws restricting or banning treatment. But it has been available in the United States for more than a decade and is endorsed by major medical associations.

Hinkle’s ruling was narrowly focused on the three children whose parents brought the suit. Simone Chriss, a lawyer for Southern Legal Counsel representing the parents, said she hopes health care providers and prosecutors see the ruling as applying statewide.

“The state no longer has any valid interest in enforcing something that’s unconstitutional,” Chriss said.

As she spoke, DeSantis’s office issued a statement saying the opposite, and the law will be enforced for all except the three children.

“We will continue fighting against the rogue elements in the medical establishment that push ideology over evidence,” press secretary Jeremy Redfern said.

Who would have guessed. Lane and Blueduck have traced all the nation's problems back to a black man. Would have been bonus points if the root of all evil would have also been homosexual or better yet transgender.

Truth is Trump was far more divisive than Obama and left the country much more fragmented and divided. The fact that anyone could suggest otherwise is ridiculous.

The problem with Obama is not the color of his skin. If you want to play that way then whites can equally claim him since he is half white. So don't. The problem with Obama was the aim and agenda of his administration (see: "fundamental transformation" speech) which means the problems with Obama were his intent and his policies. You see everything through the prism of race and in this case it is properly viewed through the prism of policy. Nothing more.

Exactly!

But as long as the apologists can use the race card they can ignore the facts.....or at least use the race card to divert .....

The central theme of President Obama's inaugural address was a call to restore responsibility—both in terms of accountability in Washington and the responsibility of ordinary people to get involved.[112][113] Obama's address did not have memorable sound bite phrases.

The theme for President Obama's speech was "Rescue, Rebuild, Restore – a New Foundation for Prosperity".[23][24][25] Among the topics that Obama covered in his speech were proposals for job creation and federal deficit reduction.[26]

Real conservatives aren't radicalized. Thus "radicalized conservative" is an oxymoron. Yet there are many radicalized republicans.
