No POTUS or candidate that I know of has made the claim that he could shoot someone on fifth Ave, and not lose his base. And, that claim is perhaps the only truth he has spoken for a long time, if ever.

Rationalizing that there are parallels or equivalence on "both sides", or as an apologist denying the significance, is really fucked up.

Doing the false equivalence thing on that one just exposes bias fallacy.

President Trump whacks cannot get around the fact the following facts: a) President Trump called for the suspension of the Constitution and his immediate reinstatement, b) the election of President Biden was not stolen from President Trump (see Bluefish in his most recent thread), c) President Trump says he took too secret documents and shared them with Kid Rock after refusing to surrender them, and d) President Trump as Commander and Chief had a duty and vested power to mobiliz le the DC Gusrd to Defend the Capital. He did not.

When the script flips, and it will, and the Republicans are in power, I hope they won't pursue the same petty, politically motivated prosecutions, impeachments, etc. That said, the Biden family belongs in jail.

The GOP is weaponizing "investigations" now as much as they can, and flipping the script, IOW lying, as hard as they can go.

There should be absolutely no doubt what they will do when the power to do so is regained.

ATLANTA − A Georgia faith leader representing more than 530 churches is calling upon Gov. Brian Kemp to publicly oppose Republican efforts to remove or discipline Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

"We strongly call upon you to make it publicly known that you do not support the calls of those who seek an investigation of (Willis)," Bishop Reginald T. Jackson, head of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Georgia, wrote in a letter sent Friday.

The letter, obtained exclusively by USA TODAY, comes at time when Republican governors are cracking down on liberal-leaning prosecutors and it cites a state law signed by Kemp this year creating a new panel, dubbed the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission, that can discipline, remove or apply measures against prosecutors who are not following the law.

Georgia Republicans pitched the change as an oversight policy, which Kemp celebrated in May as a way to hold "rogue or incompetent prosecutors" accountable. The governor's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A statement from Kemp would "put to rest this divisive, polarizing, partisan and inflammatory attempt to disrupt our state and its people," according to Jackson, who notes how Kemp testified to the grand jury in the case and has rejected Trump's false claims that the presidential contest was stolen in previous public comments.

The letter to Kemp also comes on the heels of Democrats and their allies denouncing a move by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who last month suspended State Attorney Monique Worrell, an elected prosecutor for Orange and Osceola counties.

DeSantis, who is running against Trump for the GOP presidential nomination, contended that Worrell, who like Willis is a Black Democrat, failed to pursue appropriate charges in serious cases.

Jackson emphasizes in his letter there is no evidence Willis has acted in a partisan way or violated any laws in the election interference case against Trump. Such action is, "totally unnecessary and inappropriate," he wrote.

Willis is facing growing scrutiny outside of the Peach State, especially with Trump's allies in Washington.

The Republican-led House Judiciary Committee sent a letter to her on Thursday launching an inquiry into whether she coordinated with federal officials for the indictment of Trump.

The committee, chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, demanded information from Willis regarding any communication she had with the Justice Department, the office of Special Counsel Jack Smith who also indicted Trump and executive branch officials. They set a Sept. 7 deadline to receive correspondence.

Hours before Trump surrendered to authorities, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia, addressed reporters along with the former president's supporters, and detractors, outside the Fulton County Jail where she condemned the prosecutor.

"My comment to Fani Willis is we're going to make sure that she loses her job," she said.

Greene, who called Willis a "disgrace" also previously called for Congress to defund Smith's special counsel after he indicted the former president.

In the wake of the Trump indictments, other House Republicans have seized on the anger about the GOP base in attempt to carve out new criminal justice rules.

Rep. Russell Fry, R-South Carolina, in April introduced a bill − dubbed the No More Political Prosecutions Act − that would allow current or former presidents and vice presidents to move their own civil and criminal cases from state courts to federal courts.

"This isn’t about the rule of law. This is about a radical prosecutor’s political career. This is about keeping President Trump out of the White House. This is, and always has been, about election interference," Fry posted on the platform X, formerly Twitter, after Trump was arrested in Georgia.

How screwed are we? I'll tell you.

On Wednesday, the news was all about a big bag of wind destroying Florida and flooding the South, spreading destruction and threatening pestilence and death.

Then there's Hurricane Idalia.

Also on Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell froze and stood motionless in front of an assembly of reporters — for the second time this summer — so that's encouraging.

But seriously, folks. Last Thursday, Donald Trump turned a 22-minute booking for a felony indictment in Georgia into a six-hour media special, complete with a larger motorcade than the actual president's — with dozens of camera lights on the runway and a chopper-talk session.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden, the aforementioned actual president, quietly lent assistance to Hawaii after the devastating wildfires on Maui, for which he was criticized by Republican members of Congress. He also met with international leaders at the White House this week, and went after Big Pharma to negotiate reduced Medicare prices for 10 common prescription drugs.

The press? Well, we completely missed the point, as usual, and covered every juvenile tantrum Donald Trump threw in his malevolent attempt to stay in the news. The context is missing. The press is failing us, and people are too ignorant to notice the problem. That's because we're busy dividing ourselves into teams of social cheerleaders, cheering on our champions and literally booing the opposition.

Welcome to politics 2023. One man, who claims to support Christian values, continues his run for the highest office in the land based on revenge and hypocrisy, while our president, a devout Catholic, is insulted by the likes of Ted Cruz, accused of being anti-Catholic and "the face of corruption" in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Biden, in case anyone cares, goes to church every Sunday. Trump never went once in his four years at the White House. Rumor was it would burst into flames if he did.

It would be easy to claim that all of this is new. But that would also be wrong. The seeds of today's political division and reporting began with Ronald Reagan.

While lying to the press, Reagan also set out to destroy it. He himself was quoted in the New York Times on Oct. 6, 1985, saying, "A substantial part of the political thing is acting and role playing and I know how to do that."

Of course that's literally all it is today.
