Why do americans hate penguins?
The tariffs... The whole "idea" seems to be that the tariffs are calculated against the trade deficit for every country on earth.

So Vietnam now needs to buy goods from the US for BUSD150 (yes, that's correct) in order to get down to the 10% rock bottom tariff.

This is a great plan, if you can get unemployed automotive workers in Detroit produce T-shirts and sneakers for the fast fashion industry. They may require a little bit higher salaries though, and slightly better working conditions. It MAY impact the prices of these sneakers.

But the thing EVERYBODY ask themselves now are the tariffs against McDonald Island and Heath Island. They got 10%, the lowest rate used for the countries where the US actually has a trade surplus. But they aren't even independent countries in their own right

The thing is that there are no people living on these islands. The population consist of penguins.

Maybe they don't own any suits. Maybe they haven't said thank you enough.

Really waiting for the trump fans to explain this strategy for me.

Until then, I just consider all americans to be either stupid or meek and obedient. In Europe, the streets would be filled. The highways would be clogged by people experiencing weird engine failures, thousands of them. You speak about 2nd amendment for protection against domestic regimes going bananas, but won't even go to Washington to show the white house your middle finger.

The 2nd amendment is not about hunting, they say. It is about cosplay. Interesting to see this so clearly on a shooter's forum.

Ah, and France got a 20% tariff... but the French island of Reunion - got a 30% tariff. Reunion is not a colony, not a protectorate, not an overseas territory. It's France proper.

Can't anyone get these morons in the white house a geographical therapist?

UK at 10%, with lots of car factories. All US manufacturers, except Tesla, also hit because there are tariffs on all the components they import.
EU at 20%, and China >30%, so the UK car manufacturers are more competitive now compared to EU and Chinese cars, and not much worse off compared to US car (except Tesla). I wonder how that will play out. Might be the first real benefit of Brexit.
Secondly, how quickly will companies set up UK entities, export from EU to the UK, and then export to the US, to save 10%?

I really feel sorry for those poor penguins. Maybe the TX sycophants can pay their tariffs. Just when you think Trump can’t be any dumber, he again lowers the bar. If you, as an American have any sort of pension plan, IRA, etc, Trump has clobbered it, big time. Funny though, the Trumpiteers are strangely quiet. cuckoo

I remember when the left worshiped Obama as a demigod. Funny how they hate people for admitting or liking a president half as much as they did for Obama.

Because someone else did it too or first doesn't make it right.

It's plain to see that MAGA "hates" as you say Americans like John Kelly, Mattis and Milley is because they have a clear understanding of their loyalty and duty to honor and country. Individual Demigods and political factions don't have priority.

Just because it is me. For the fun of it.

It is spelled demagogue.

Being a political leader who seeks support by appealing to the desires and prejudices of ordinary people rather than by using rational argument.

A demagogue engages in demagoguing. Demagoguing being hetorically exploit (an issue) for political purposes in a way calculated to appeal to the desires and prejudices of ordinary people.

President Trump is a demagogue. The demagogue President Trump is more concerned with demagoguing against gay people then governance anchored in our Constitution.

And many cars produced in the UK are exported, also to countries with the wheel on the right side. Same as cars are imported from countries where they drive on the right side, yet they still produce cars with the wheel on the wrong side to export to the UK.

https://bmmagazine.co.uk/news/...ds-with-no-us-trade/

April 4, 2025 - By: Paul Jones - Business Matters Magazine

"Heard Island and McDonald Islands — an uninhabited external Australian territory near Antarctica, with no permanent human habitation — was also included on the White House’s list of tariffed “countries”, facing a 10% levy.
According to World Bank export figures: https://wits.worldbank.org/Cou...D/Product/All-Groups ,the US imported $1.4 million worth of goods from the territory in 2022, almost entirely classified as machinery and electrical equipment.
However, several shipping records show that goods from Europe were erroneously marked as coming from the territory. One such shipment, for parts used in a PET recycling plant, was sent from Vienna, Austria, but the sender’s location was mistakenly listed as “Vienna, Heard Island and McDonald Islands”."

The article goes on to summarize:

"While no US comment has been issued, the situation underscores the dangers of relying on automated trade data without sufficient checks. What was intended as a calculated show of protectionism by the Trump administration has instead exposed serious flaws in international trade reporting — with potential diplomatic and economic consequences for territories wrongly caught in the crossfire."

Lots of car manufacturing being done in the UK. Not just Bentley, Rolls Royce, McLaren, Aston Martin, Lotus, Jaguar and Landrover, Mini Cooper, but Nissan, Honda and Toyota also have factories there.

However, for many manufacturers, their supply chains are complicated. A US manufacturer might produce a car in a factory in the US, but the manufacturing of one part might originate from the US, then further build in Mexico, then further assembled in Canada, then finally put in the car in the US. How many tariffs would that part be subject too?

Supply chains like that are organized like that for reasons, and found the best suited to the task (car manufacturers have optimized their supply chains for many decades). Tariffs isolates a country from each other, will that make US manufacturing better? Maybe. But other countries will bond together, to address the impact, and be stronger competitors to the US than they were before.
