Wild turkeys are disappearing — but no one is sure why
Story by Dino Grandoni • 12h

================================================

For several years past I've seen lots of wild turkeys. Also, I got pictures of them on my game cameras. Not so much now.

Happy Thanksgiving!

It seems to be all ground nesting birds.

When I was a kid (70s)…I could leave my house with a single-shot shotgun and walk up (without a dog) 3-4 coveys of bobwhite quail…they were everywhere. Now basically extinct through North Central Texas and south central OK. I still have them in South Texas and a few on our western extent just sorth of Wichita Falls.

Nobody still has a great explanation.

The only major change I have seen in the area is the huge up tick in feral hogs. There basically were zero in the area up through the 70s.

There has been some increase in predators like raccoons, coyotes, bobcats, (due to no fur hunting) and raptors.

There are no fire ants where I live but the quail are long gone, turkeys are dwindling, whippoorwills, woodcock, etc super scarce now.

I stand by that the #1 problem began when the fur industry was killed by city people. There are simply too many predators. Some of which most people do not realize, destroy bird and reptile nests such as the armadillo, which is rapidly expanding its range.

People who run deer feeders also feed predators. That includes hogs.

All gone:

Fire ants can’t help for sure. But, I had them in South Texas where I still have some quail long before I had them in North Central Texas.

I have ranch country in North Central Texas that has the exact same habitat it has now as in the late 1800’s. Quail went away completely in early 2000s. In the 50’s they were the most common bird there.

In my country the there certainly is a direct inverse correlation between the hog numbers and quail numbers and they can’t help quail for sure. But, we always had hogs in south Texas where we still have quail to some extent.

It’s quite puzzling to me.

I have seen several coveys of bobwhite lately. It's such a pleasure to see them - wild. In the spring when they are ready to nest, their calls are a pleasure too.

In the spring, for several years, I have seen turkey hens, obviously tending a nest nearby. I have no way of knowing their success rate.

I have not seen a brood of chicks.

The farmers around here have reduced the hog numbers a lot. They simply shoot them at night with night vision tech and AR15s. Buzzards are happy.

We were told wild turkeys couldnt survive up here. They slowly made their way north. They figured out farms had feed year round. Swamps and warm pockets to roost in nights. The turkeys moved come winter, just like the deer yard up for winter.
Extra cold stretches kill off big numbers, but a good spring lets them rebound.
To keep them out of the feed area, my brother feeds them at his house. We buy a couple ton of bulk cracked corn. He feeds around 150 birds through the winter. Come spring, they scatter back to where they came from, miles around.

I still think Old School poison is a valid answer.

I've noticed in some places farmers and ranchers are more aware of and pursuing different land practices like rotational grazing , shelter belts, stream restoration. I'm not familiar at all with our Southern United States, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that those farmers are as interested in bobwhite habitat as we are.

Fire ants are endemic here.

Can't get rid of them. I tried - with the stuff from Home Depot, etc. All they do is move. Where there was one bed, after the poison, there's three adjacent.

I wish I knew how to get rid of them at least in the yard. My "yard" is at least five acres BTW.

The side effects of broadcast poison are reversible.

Our flora and fauna have survived DDT, strychnine and other. Feral pigs, (the Super pigs,) pythons in Florida, carp, etc,.... should be destroyed. My families farms/ ranches in California were on the rangeland historically bunch grasses. The Annual grasses came in hundreds of years ago with the livestock and pushed the bunch grasses out. The Range is the worse for wear.

Treat the mounds and then broadcast the bait in the concentration recommended for preventing fire-ant colonization. Reapply every 6 months. It will keep them at bay at the borders of your yard.

I agree that fire ants can’t be good for quail.

However, ME has quail in Ga and fire ants. The ranch I have that got fire ants first in deep South Texas still has quail and the occasional really good year.

Quail have basically become extinct in North Central Texas and south Central OK and yes there are fire ants there but less than in South Texas. And quail became scarce way before fire ants entered that area to any extent.

None of the quail researchers blame the disappearance of quail “totally” on fire ants but say they may be a contributing factor.
