I think there is a relevant comparison between veitnam and Ukraine. Its just not the one you make. The mistake America has made in the past is getting involved with wars where the population want America to defend it, yet they dont feel the burning need to fight themselves. So vietnam failed because the opposition had a stronger desire to win than did the south vietnamese. Arguably South korea was a victory where the south had that desire against initially a stronger force. And maintains that desire too this day. Afganistan, the people there didnt have that desire either- well the male percentage of population anyway. Ukraine has that desire in spades and its quite obvious that A russian occupation will never be accepted. The result of a Russian victory would be an ethnic cleansing on a scale we have to seen in a long long time. | |||

We’ve never won a war on our own? I think there have been a few. Admittedly a while back, and some were not fought for the best of reasons. Our biggest problem with wars is that we fight some with unclear objectives. Trust me, if we wanted to conquer and take over the territory of Afghanistan, or Iraq, we could militarily do it. It’s just winning such a war is politically unacceptable here. The Russians and us have opposite problems. We have the ability, but not the will. They have the will, but not the ability. Iraq and Afghanistan should be seen by your coreligionists as a pretty blunt warning. Don’t commit acts of terror in the US, or very nasty things happen to you. It may not be fair. It may not be right. But it is reality. If you push us too far, look what happens when we are willing to wage total war. Now, I can agree that we have gotten in to too many wars that have no vital national security interests involved… but that’s a far cry from us “getting our asses kicked” At least we leave once we are done doing whatever… | |||
