Idiot Savant is a good description. Hes also hard working beyond belief and is not scared to put his "crazy" ideas into action.
What hes not is a super genius. Id say hes on the autistic spectrum and very focussed on what he likes.

So what would you know about ice?

What plans do you make for sleet or freezing rain locking you out of your car?

I lived in Anchorage 42 years where we would regularly get these conditions. Many times I would go my car after work and find it covered with ice. I was never locked out--with a manual door handle. The ice sounds like glass when it breaks around the door.

Sounds like a Tesla design flaw--all of their cars aren't sold in Florida or Hawaii.

Well it certainly isn’t Musk. He has enabled fake news and falsehoods like no other.

As an example, false information that Zelenski purchased two yachts spread on Twitter by a congresswoman.

It’s become a cesspit of miss-information for the gullible, and those who choose to consume the inaccurate garbage to reinforce their own viewpoints.

On X, formerly Twitter, Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said: "Anyone who votes to fund Ukraine is funding the most corrupt money scheme of any foreign war in our country's history."
She linked to a story containing the yacht rumour

I do have respect for Elon. Some things he does I dislike others I like.

What I do like are his libertarian principles. I can live with the rest and let him live as well.

I will say though…if you don’t think Elon is intelligent…try to get yourself to where he is and accomplish what he has done and see how difficult it is. It doesn’t happen by accident.

I give the man his due and don’t try to tear him down out of envy.

You could not run fast enough to give me an EV and I think the concept of EVs from an environmental protection aspect is both dumb and hypocritical.

Frankly the outright rubbish that is the "modern" EV tech, including VERY dirty batteries and being charged from fossil fuel electricity is one of the greatest shams that some people have ever bought into.

Lane, I am to and froe from Dallas to Houston several times a month, sometimes just a day trip - no EV can make the round trip without a multi-hour charge - while a $500 camry could do it, with $40 bucks total fuel.

If a $100k (or 25k) EV can't drive the equal to "across Texas in a Day" then someone should be saying "now wait just a dang minute" especially when MOST ev's don't have the same range as a tank full of gas from the same SIZED car - and that car, even new, costs half of less of the EV - and yeah, full tank range is important to me in vehicle selection

One might recall that the first several years of EVs, prior to Tesla, were lease only, as the makers didn't want bad press of the batteries winding up in junkyards/landfills and causing fires.

One day, with at least two full generations of battery development, EVs will make sense - think "shipstones" from Heinlien and others

It seems fairly simple. Until recently Twitter had staff who would remove fake news.

All the while there are people dumb enough or gullible enough to swallow misinformation there is a need for platforms to weed it out. I’m not advocating a block on one’s right to voice an opinion, just anything which proports to be news which isn’t.

Others seem to manage it, despite the stupid comment above about AP or Reuters being just as bad, each take care to ensure what is promulgated as factual is accurate.

As I see it, if it’s an open source platform- ie anyone can post, it’s impossible to police for factuality.

Some things could be researched, some would be pretty small interest and a drain on resources, and by definition the fact checkers can be in error as well.

If you understand it’s an open forum, you know there is factual error.

In my mind, I’d rather have all comers be able to speak and allow me to decide truthfulness rather than have an unknown editor making the decisions intermittently and thus making people justify the source as “it’s got to be true, it’s published” (or whatever).

Frankly, I have no interest in Twitter/X but I can certainly disregard it as being a verified source.

It is useful in letting you know what some folks believe as opposed to facts.

What makes people think Musk is a genius?

His money came from his father's emerald mine and he's never invented anything except the ugliest, most useless pickup truck ever built. All his great "innovations" he bought from other people, and he paid $44 billion for Twitter when it was worth half that and has managed to devalue it by at least 75% and run off every serious advertiser they had.

The people who think Musk is a genius also think Trump is.

Genius probably is the wrong word. Again I dont understand people who see this as black and white, good and bad.

Hes a visionary who has an incredible work effort and no fear.

Like many of the richest people he has risked loosing it all and may still do.

Vision wise Starlink is an exceptional idea. Space x and reusable rockets is also up there.
His Mars ambitions are out there but I would not put it past him to achieve it. Tesla and Twitter might be flops?

But really its not the success or otherwise of those companies, Its what he chooses to do with them thats the question.

Starlink isn't Musk's "vision", several companies were working on the same thing before the dot.com bust put them out of business, notably Teledesic and Iridium. Musk just bought bits and pieces and people from them to start Starlink.

The guy is an entrepreneurial genius.

That doesn’t mean he can’t back a wrong horse now and then.

I don’t have a case of hero worship regarding him.

I do admire him for wanting to have an open platform in Twitter. But I do acknowledge his lack of consistency and hypocrisy at times as well.

I do think he’s a bit less hypocritical than Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. Both of whom I feel the same ways towards.
