"As self-proclaimed 'economic dictator,' Hugenberg kept pace with Hitler in outraging political opponents and much of the public. He purged ministries. He dismantled workers’ rights. He lowered the wages of his own employees by 10 percent. 'The real battle against unemployment lies singularly and alone in reestablishing profitability in economic life,' one of Hugenberg’s newspapers editorialized, arguing that the goal of economic policy should be to rescue 'the professions, and those most negatively affected: the merchant middle class.' Hugenberg declared a temporary moratorium on foreclosures, canceled debts, and placed tariffs on several widely produced agricultural goods, violating trade agreements and inflating the cost of living," writes Timothy W. Ryback.

Fascism was also principally a response to leftism/communism. One way to stop fascism is to avoid going too far to the left. Somehow the political left in the US is pushing for going further left and the political right is going further right. My question is how do we stop the exaggerated swings that seem to be the new normal? I’ve tried for moderating in my party… and got shouted down in part because the left was going further left regardless of what we did. The folks on the right in many cases are angry because the checks and balances were not used to stop the left. Thus the comments of RINO and calling it “the uniparty”.

Dr. Butler points out historically Fascism was a anthesis to socialism. Fair enough. Yet, such arguments were dismissed at Nuremberg. Making such an argument today does not make it any better. Dr. Butler has never lived under either.

Interesting. So you admit the lefty’s here claiming Trump is a fascist are also incorrect? I also note you have not addressed the second point. How do we stop this exaggerated swings from left to right in politics? I’ve made my voice known (and shouted down) locally at my precinct caucus last year. For what it’s worth a democrat friend also brought up the extremism on there side at hers. She was shouted down because in her words “TrumpTrumpTrumpTrump”. No admission that neither side is in a vacuum.

More of your false equivalencies, Dr. Butler. Please explain how the left has gone "too far" in recent years. Maybe I'm pretty far left myself--I don't think so--but I don't see it. Can you do it without resorting to the so-called culture war? In which Trumpets want to deny equal rights to gays and trans people? Can you show us how ledvm's words that people who don't support the Great Leader are the "enemies of the state" is equivalent to something the leftists here want? Hogwash. Is universal health coverage for our people too far left? Only American rightists think so. Every other first-world country covers its citizens. I support it. So I guess that makes me too far left.

I did not say anything in relation to President Trump. I see some very Fascist actions by this President, and I am not referring to racism. Is he a fascist? I would have to set down with his policies and Giovanni Gentiile: Philosopher of Fascism, and Mussolini: The Doctrine of Fascism to answer that question. As for swings, I blame the politicians. I blame President Trump more than anyone because of his behavior after he lost the election. The current national security crisis is just a continuation of that game plan. Oh, and a universal healthcare manager through taxation is not too far left. It was litigated by through the S. Ct. What causes extremes is everyone who claims that such policy is unconstitutional, a violation of some “god” given right, or communism. None are true. The matter is closed as a legal question. Yet, demagogue‘s are going to demagogue. Dr. Easter is not a reaction. He is the problem. He knows better, but he preaches the demagogue gospel for nothing but political gains. He wants the Texas state legislature to be able to force Eve to say his prayer not for God, but doing so makes everyone more likely to vote the way he likes.

OMG Doc, I just cannot figure what world you are in. Can you not get it? THERE IS NO FAR LEFT IN THE US. Obama, Biden, Harris, Schumer etc are RIGHT wing. They are far more right wing than any European leader. They support net 15% tax or less - imagine. They support low wages and no living wage for Americans. Even Bernie Sanders and AOC are middle roaders.

you are always on the left of something/someone but if you rey to make and look nicer you are trying to pretend to be a lefty guy and it will look like they have no sympathy for trump while most love what he is doing to them and the rest of the world but again without thinking of the consequences ...

I grew up poor. I bet I have done more blue-collar labor on a ranch and in the oilfield than most here. My father and my grandfather drilled into my head as kid that the only right a working man had was the right to quit and hunt another job. In reality…that is truth…we as a society just don’t want to accept it and artificially change it to make us feel better. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. Universal health coverage is also breaking every other nation's budget as they start covering more and more items of questionable national health value. As has been shown by the whole Ukraine situation, the other western democracies have been using the US with its "disparities" to fund their governments in the form of defense. The Scandinavian nations generally do the best... why? The anti-green North Sea oil. When that spigot goes dry, they are going to have to make some serious alterations of how they fund their government.

You really don't get it, do you? All politics is local. The far left in the US may be center left or even "conservative" by your lights. Heck, Hitler had a lot of socialist policies but is branded as far right due to his opposition to communism. Yes, I get that the idea of a bipolar political spectrum is not exactly accurate.
