A few weeks ago he said he would balance the budget by sales taxes, cutting medicare and social security.

Well last weekend he rules those 3 things out.

Then for a few days he said he'd cut the military to achieve it.

UH what? Republicans cutting the military by $1.4 Trillion? (2022 deficit).

Today I just saw on the news where he said he wants Biden to tell him what he wants.

I thought the house is in charge of the budget?

What a cluster fuck this guy is.

Anyone here think 1. we can balance the budget or 2. They aren't going to cave and not plunge the US into default.

We certainly can balance the budget. It would require unpopular choices be made, and I doubt the current mix in Washington will agree on them.

As to default, not unlikely. The two sides are unlikely to compromise. Biden refuses to agree to any restrictions, and the GOP refuses to give him a blank check.

He's playing Bidens own game back at him.
Pretty easy to figure that one out.

something else we can hold the 21 idiots who held McCarthy hostage on the speaker vote for....and, Biden's not "refusing to agree to any restrictions", he's refusing to agree to the ridiculously unreasonable budget demands of the republican conservative extremists in the House.

Now, they're playing the "who gets the blame" game when no agreement gets reached.

Well, I hope nobody here gets a social security check or expects veterans benefits. That's what will be on the chopping block come summer.

Idiocy.

President Reagan took the same No negotiating position as President Biden has now done.

House can pass a budget. The President can veto it.

As for the debt ceiling, I have no respect for anyone who would use it as leverage.

The thing needs and will be raised. The Question is will the Republicans crash the economy before it happens, or use their new 1 vote to bring a vote to Vacate the Speaker to get even more crazy.

It is certainly possible to balance the budget. I hope the freedom caucus holds the line. Probable? I doubt it.

Right. Same idiots that required 15 votes to get a Speaker and turned McCarthy into their collective ass-kisser. Nothing but a bunch of "look at me" bomb-throwers. Zero interest in governing. Only thing that matters is pushing an extremist agenda so their whack base (that's you) will re-elect them.

Yes, but Congress still has an obligation to draft a budget the two are suppose to go hand in hand.

The Senate Committee on the Budget was established in 1974 by the Congressional Budget Act (Congress.gov). Along with the House Budget Committee, it is responsible for drafting Congress’ annual budget plan and monitoring action on the budget for the federal government. In addition, the Budget Committees have jurisdiction over the Congressional Budget Office (cbo.gov) .

The reason we keep hitting this debt ceiling every 12ish months is there is no long term budget.

Instead we/Congress keep doing this:

Budget Resolutions
The annual budget resolution is an agreement between the House and Senate on a budget plan for the upcoming fiscal year and at least the following four fiscal years. The budget resolution is in the form of a concurrent resolution, so it is not sent to the president for his signature and thus does not become law, but it does provide a framework for subsequent legislative action on the appropriations bills.

I find this very informative about the Right Wing of the Republican Party’s position to make Social Security part of the debate.

How is the Social Security program treated? Since 1990, the budget resolution has been required by law to exclude the income and expenditures of the Social Security Trust Fund. The charts above show the total, or “unified,” budget but the congressional budget resolution omits Social Security spending and the corresponding revenue from the Social Security payroll tax.

I guess, one can argue the above needs to change. I object to that.

Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire…what the world has taught me. I can see how some would take offense…doesn’t bother me. I have also been known rarely turn the other cheek…another failing of mine.

However, it is NOT taking the Lord’s name in vain which was the gist of mine and JTEXs point. And, only someone ignorant of faith would make the leap…my point.

They never said "fuck you" in my church when I was growing up. Maybe it's just Catholics who forbid that language.

No, it's technically not taking the Lord's name in vain. But it's not very Christ-like either.
