Wednesday’s vote is largely symbolic, in that it urges federal prosecutors to investigate and file criminal charges against the attorney general, but that is extremely unlikely to happen, given the Justice Department’s past practice and legal analysis.

In the run-up to the vote, Garland had vowed not to be intimidated by the threat of contempt.

“It is deeply disappointing that this House of Representatives has turned a serious congressional authority into a partisan weapon,” the attorney general said in a written statement after the vote, which he said “disregards the constitutional separation of powers, the Justice Department’s need to protect its investigations, and the substantial amount of information we have provided to the Committees. I will always stand up for this Department, its employees, and its vital mission to defend our democracy.”

my opinion? much like many other examples, on both sides, abuse of position / what valid need is there -- it's an abuse of power --

AND

should have been handled through a FOIA request, which will take several years to work it's way through court


Frankly, IDC what gramps had to say vs the transcript - i am not interested in hours of err, uhm, and, ahh

Though i do recall Nancy saying, repeatedly (and wrongly) that the HOUSE is a co-equal branch of the government -- the house is HALF of congress, as CLEARLY defined in the constitution (, and a whim, especially a political WHIM, by the house, not matching an approved request from the Senate, is just politics

As there is little legal, valid, governmental reason to demand these, and it's just playing politics ---

EXACTLY the same as both the demand for trump's tax returns AND most other contempt of congress findings....

the FUNNY thing is the vote for approving this was almost 100% along political lines, with the obverse being true under almost all other cases

oh, let's pull in the related issue of dems trying to add controls to the SCOTUS -- the house LITERALLY has no control of the SCOTUS, with the possible exception of impeachment. this is murky, but i do assert that the house could impeach a SCOTUS justice. Frankly, the best control would be an amendment - as that's a cure listed in the constitution
