I'm getting a dead link...

Any how, in California's defense, the last time this happened was 1939.

I had never heard of the entire 3rd Fleet at Coronado sortie West into the Pacific to ride out a possible Cat 5 before, have you?

I initially had the same reaction Jeff, then I paused to consider how ridiculous we behave when faced with the prospect of cold weather and ice and snow. I am sure the folks from colder climes snicker at how over the top we behave too.

Apparently fleet meteorologists missed the fact that this is, at worst, a Cat 1, more likely a tropical storm…. Oh well, fleet oil is cheap, right? coffee

Both States are run by incompetent idiots.

One is more concerned about banning women from having an abortion, the other is a stupid commie who is forcing his population to leave his cities!

A typical American politics in modern times.

One of each party! clap

Cheaper than the third fleet.

I was just reading a retired Admirals opinion that the Navy is 200 + ships short of where we need to be already.

I think it's partly a ploy so Newsom can look like a hero on emergency management and get some positive press for his eventual run for president in 2028 (or VP on the 2024 Biden ticket if Biden is having trouble in the polls and needs to jettison Kamala)

Are far back as I can remember, Texans are frequently in a tizzy over winter weather - We don't know how to drive in the snow because we don't get it often - but getting hit with a TS while it's losing power while dragging over Baja - it's literally just a big thuderstorm at that point -- and yes, I remember Allison

I'm having trouble imagining Newsom as anything more than he is, a local poobah with enough money to campaign on his own funds.
On the other hand, Harris as vice president seems a little odd, so maybe I'm full of beans on this too.

If Biden's VP gets to be an important issue, he's the issue...

Lots of wind and rain here last night, some canyons will have bridges washed out but it's Monday and there's work needs done.

Direct result of litigation happy America. Imagine a weather event NOT declared an emergency and someone’s pet drowns. Cue up the attorneys and now somehow the government is responsible. No no…much better to protect your backside and declare an emergency. “We told you so”

Today, there seems to be a tendency to over-state weather events. Even here, we get winter storm warnings ahead of six inches of snow. We get extreme heat warnings for 90 degree days. We have become a nation of candy-asses. Having said this, there is no doubt that flash flood events will be serious in the locales where they occur. Regards, Bill

LA got 3.5" of rain yesterday - pretty heavy for them - some local flooding --

I'll say this, if a TS did this much damage, an actual hurricane strike would be pretty tough for them.

Now, imagine that last sentence reword for snowmagedon in Texas.

I have never understood southerners who don’t employ common sense and slow down in ice and snow. Or northerners for that matter!

Southerners might not slow down because they don't know any better. Northerners, like me, may not slow down because they are over-confident from driving in it for the last sixty years.
I will always recall the reaction of the guys in the shop, in Huntsville, Alabama, when I drove up with my '62 Ford, from Idaho.
"What the hell kinda tars ya got there, Boy?"
"Those are snow tires", says I.
"Go on!" I never heard of such a thing!" He shook his head.
A couple weeks later, we got about a half inch of snow. When I got into the shop there were only a couple guys there. When I came in, one guy said, "I didn't reckon ya'll 'd have any trouble. What with havin them snow tars and all". A great bunch of guys and a lot of fun. Regards, Bill.

Ask all the survivors in Lahaina weather the government there over-reacted with warnings. Oh, wait....there weren't any.

This is true. Southerners all like wide fat mud tires, which absolutely suck in the snow.

Yeah .. cute... say, can you tell me more about Cali's rolling blackouts during EVERY summer? I mean, like, oh WHERE in the world did ERCOT get the notion of rolling blackouts during extreme load ---

but Cali's "every summer" rolling blackouts? I mean, i THINK it gets warmer every summer??

LA highest projected high temp this coming 10 days? 89
Dallas projected high temp this coming 10 days? 108

Probably because they were already in a pattern of rolling brownouts, which is normal.
