some are seeing the light even not enough a very good start ... https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/...a-hostages-1.7507763 Israeli army says it will fire air force reservists who signed letter condemning Gaza war Nearly 1,000 reservists, retirees demanded immediate return of hostages, even if it halts fighting Israel's military said Friday it will fire air force reservists who signed a letter condemning the war in Gaza and accusing it of only serving political interests and not bringing the hostages home. In a statement to The Associated Press, an army official said there was no room for any body or individual, including reservists in active duty, "to exploit their military status while simultaneously participating in the fighting," calling it a breach of trust between commanders and subordinates. The army said it decided that any active reservist who signed the letter will not be able to continue serving. It did not specify how many people that included, or if the firings had begun. Nearly 1,000 Israeli Air Force reservists and retirees signed a letter, published in Israeli media on Thursday, demanding the immediate return of the hostages, even at the cost of ending the fighting. The letter comes as Israel ramps up its offensive in Gaza, trying to pressure Hamas to agree to free hostages, 59 of whom are still being held, more than half of which are dead. Israel has imposed a blockade on food, fuel and humanitarian aid that has left civilians facing acute shortages as supplies dwindle. It has pledged to seize large parts of the Palestinian territory and establish a new security corridor through it. While the soldiers who signed the letter didn't refuse to keep serving, it's part of a growing number of Israeli soldiers speaking out against the 18-month conflict, some saying they saw or did things that crossed ethical lines. "It's completely illogical and irresponsible on behalf of the Israeli policy makers … risking the lives of the hostages, risking the lives of more soldiers and risking lives of many, many more innocent Palestinians, while it had a very clear alternative," Guy Poran, a retired Israeli Air Force pilot who spearheaded the letter, told The Associated Press. He said he's not aware of anyone who signed the letter being fired, and since it was published, it has gained dozens more signatures. From razing rubble to blowing up homes: IDF soldiers share how they expanded Gaza buffer zone in new report Israel releases Palestinian after he spent 9.5 years in prison, developing schizophrenia Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu downplayed the letter on Friday, saying it was written by a "small handful of weeds, operated by foreign-funded NGOs whose sole goal is to overthrow the right-wing government." He said anyone who encourages refusal to serve in the army will be immediately dismissed. Soldiers are required to steer clear of politics, and they rarely speak out against the army. After Hamas stormed into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, Israel quickly united behind the war launched against the Palestinian militant group. Divisions in Israel have grown as the war progresses, but most criticism has focused on the mounting number of soldiers killed and the failure to bring home hostages, not actions in Gaza. Advocates for hostage return keep up pressure Freed hostages and their families are doing what they can to keep attention on their plight, and urge the government to get everyone out. For Holocaust Remembrance Day this year, Agam Berger, a military spotter who was taken hostage and freed in January, will perform at a March of the Living Ceremony in Poland — a yearly memorial march at the site of Auschwitz that honours the six million Jews killed by Nazi Germany and celebrates the state of Israel. Berger will play a 130-year-old violin that survived the Holocaust and was brought to Israel, at the main ceremony in the Birkenau concentration camp. She'll be accompanied by singer Daniel Weiss, a resident of Kibbutz Be'eri whose parents were murdered on Oct. 7. The war in Gaza shows no signs of slowing. Since Israel ended an eight-week ceasefire last month, it said it will push further into Gaza until Hamas releases the hostages. More than 1,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire collapsed, according to the United Nations. The Israeli military on Friday issued an urgent warning to residents in several neighbourhoods in northern Gaza, calling on them to evacuate immediately. At least 26 people have been killed and more than 100 others wounded in the last 24 hours, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which doesn't distinguish between civilians and combatants.

A bit off the topic, but has anybody itemized costs to support Israel? I'm not sure we should spend money to support either side at this point.

With our international arms dealing the West and the Superpowers are arming the planet with mostly just less than superpower weapons. ISIS, Taliban, Al Queda bristle almost as much as we do and it's with our doing. Not only weaponry, but we give them the funding for their terrorism with our oil purchases. It's not like the Caliphate has any industry or economic engines outside of religious fervor and crude oil, they don't build their own rifles, they don't like their pockets with broccoli sales to Somalia, their economy and terrorism is predicated on the West paying them.

To answer your question, yes, the US has given Israel nearly one TRILLION dollars in support(adjusted for inflation). Far, far too much if you ask me. It has been over 75 years, I think it is about time that the Israelis support themselves.

Most Israeli citizens are against the crimes being committed in Gaza!

Five Americans still held hostage by Hamas. I don't understand why Trump doesn't have a marine division in Gaza having a contest with the IDF seeing who can blow the most stuff up everyday. No weekends off guys! No holidays! You can't be #1 in blowing the most shit up unless you get out there and start lighting fuses!

Isreal is the most guilty country of human rights. The most racist country on the face of the earth. Jews are welcomed in from any country to come and become citizens. To get that done, Palestinians have to be eradicated. Home destroyed. Lands confiscated. Do you know how many new illegal colonies have been built on confiscated Palestinian lands in the pasty year?? And the bribed the MAGA ARSEHOLE to announce that those still living in Gaza will never be allowed back home!! Holocaust in every meaning of the word!

I don't believe the military has the right to free speech. I think you know better R, both of us have read many news pieces about protest in Israel.

Maybe the US could start with that Goliath Grouper better know as Ukraine. ![]()

The US has given Ukraine a small fraction of what it has given to Israel, math is hard for some folks, you might be one of them. ![]()

Maybe, but today is the wrong day to do it. Questioning American support for Ukraine was appropriate before the first check was written. Now that good American dollars have been spent we absolutely should see it thru. In my mind this war has become a good opportunity or at least an opportunity to fold Vlad and the USSR permanently. Vlad offers nothing to the West. Vlad brings no economy, no intelligence, no technology, nothing. Vlad and Russia in it entirely offer nothing more than the dirt, what grows in it and what's in storage below the dirt. There isn't a single Russian citizen worth saving or retaining. I think the smart thing to do is see our efforts thru and assist Europe in turning a page. Let them have it all it should go without saying.

How much did the US and the west spend in terms not only of money but soldiers lives on Iraq and Afghanistan trying to bring “ freedom” to each only to find that they didn’t seem to want it. Now you have a country who does want it, desperately, and they are willing to do the dying to keep it, and your clown in chief has withdrawn intelligence sharing, withdrawn support for various weapon types and tried to humiliate Ukraines leader on US tv all for his own political purposes, and yet has done little if anything to compel any sort of compromise on the part of Russia.

the guilt of the western world will never stop after what happened during wwII but even general de gaulle stopped to provide military support between 1967 and 1973 for a good reason ... but i do agree when a country like Ukraine wants their freedom usa is gone but have no problem to support israel and idf while they let down all their other allies ...

Here's more food for thought. Israel had a balanced budget or a budget surplus as recently as 2022. The United States, not since 2001. .
