On to Day 3.

Think it will end tomorrow after one more vote when McCarthy withdraws from contention.

McCarthy should have made sure he had the vote long long ago. And if he didn’t…he should’ve withdrawn after 2 ballots.

If he can’t get these votes…he can’t lead the House anyway.

Looks like we teach your country a few things too. And, you pay us to do it. The hypocrisy astounds.

Investigations by the Washington Post, in collaboration with the Project on Government Oversight (POGO), revealed that 280 retired military troops sought work as military contractors or consultants for the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Among those named were former generals and admirals.

Two long-term investigations disclosed that the highest-ranking officer was retired General Jim Mattis. Mattis served as former US president Donald Trump's defence secretary. He also served as a military advisor to the Gulf nation in 2015, returning as defence chief in 2017.

Mattis had also previously worked as a senior counsellor at a Washington-based consulting firm called The Cohen Group. Its co-president, Robert Tyrer, revealed to the Washinton Post that Mattis advised Emiratis on "the operational, tactical, informational and ethical aspects" of military operations, but that he did not request or accept any type of payment from the Emirati government besides reimbursement for travel expenses.

Under the Freedom of Information Act, the Washington Post was able to obtain 4,000 documents. Through these documents, it was revealed that 15 other former high-ranking military officials worked directly with Saudi Arabia's ministry of defence.

Among them was former US president Barack Obama's national security adviser Marine General James L. Jones. Jones began working in Saudi Arabia in 2017, where he was able to enlist the help of several former senior Pentagon officials.

According to the newspaper, Jones said he was approached by the Kingdom's government as its Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was searching "if there was something that we could do to help them in transforming their Ministry of Defense".

Documents reveal that four unnamed retired officers received six-figure salaries, from US$200,000 to US$300,000 to advise Saudi Arabia's ministry of defence. The UAE paid annual compensations of over US$200,00 to helicopter pilots and US$120,000 to aircraft mechanics.

What, 100 odd years ago.

Actually, it was almost 200 years ago before the formation of these two parties as we know them today.

Hardly the modern era. If we take your example and apply it to these two modem parties, you are saying the Rs can take a few months, it is no big deal.

The House can conduct No Business until a speaker is chosen.

The point is that the process works and government goes on unharmed.

This is not that big of a deal and will be forgotten by the majority rapidly.

Who knows…maybe some good will become of it. Lord knows it can’t make a bigger mess out of today’s Congress than it already has become.

GOP looks like they can’t order a pizza.

So, whenever a member R or D does not like a piece or part of a bill, that one member can call for s vote to oust the Speaker.

That is a bomb waiting to go off.

I understand party policy but I find this entire position a little unsettling.
We vote representatives to represent us as a local entity.
I do not believe any representative should always vote on party lines regardless of conservative or liberal.
These parties are so polarized neither can see an opportunity in a another's path.
Representatives are basically held hostage / black balled by a party position and not their own ideals or possibly the people that elected them.
I think this uprising is OK. Dems should consider the same.
Grow a set...

If these idiots can't pick a leader, what happens when the next debt ceiling vote comes up?

You've got a few nuts holding the rest of the house hostage. And by letting it go on and continue, you encourage it.

And, BTW, the process isn't working and government isn't going on....they can do nothing until a speaker is elected.

That's the deal McCarthy offered the whackos in order to try to get their votes. Unbelievable.

Anytime MTG or Matt Gaetz want a headline, they can call for a vote on ousting the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States.

I'm starting to think Saeed may be right....the republicans have turned us into a banana republic.

I actually like that there is such difficulty electing a Speaker.

In my opinion, it’s preferable to the Dems’ rubber stamping the Pelosi agenda.
The point that each district elects local representatives seems to be lost on Democrats.

Good for you. Voters like you are the reason the US House of Representatives can't elect a Speaker.

And....the point of having a Speaker of the House is so those representatives can, you know...vote on stuff and do legislation and form committees. It's called governing the country.

I've come to expect nothing good from congress generally, certainly all bad from the democrats and a majority crummy from the GOP.

I never once for a moment thought this new congress would produce anything of value so I see no problem with the current disfunction.

I don't get the umbrage, do we really want new committee investigations? We really need new laws passed? New taxes levied?

This legislature was going to get zero good done in the next two years no matter what. I say embrace the vacuum.

You all making snotty comments on the UAE…

It is really uncalled for. Saeed makes a comment and you seem to insist on a childish response.

He’s getting a rise out of you, which is what he wants.

We all know that if the UAE would be attacked, they would call on the USA to help them, and we would do so.

Can anyone name a country in the Middle East that does a better job than the UAE as far as rights or running their economy? I suppose one could argue Israel, but I think a good debater could show some serious holes there as well.

The UAE is doing what a lot of us wish the USA would do for immigration. They try and stay out of their citizen’s pockets to a good extent. Yes, you need to be related to someone to get political power, but frankly, statistically your odds of the average Emirati getting a high level political job are much higher than the odds of the average American… just based on population.

As long as it doesn’t interfere with our national security interests, who cares how they choose their leaders if they are happy?

We have no issues with monarchies (UK, Monaco, etc.) no issues with religious states (Vatican, Israel) so why the angst about the UAE? They certainly have behaved better than most of the nations in the region?

In an absolute sense, no the UK is not… but isn’t the head of state the king in Britain? Yes, the prime minister and the parliament are running the country- but isn’t the House of Lords an item as well?

Are the emirates absolute monarchies? I thought they had some sort of electoral process - it’s not absolute primogeniture is it?

It sounds like they do have some voting, and each emirate has its own government, in addition to a federal one.

Yes, I can find that it’s not really “fair” to everyone, but then again, the proof is in the pudding… the UAE is certainly better run and has more rights than its neighbors Saudi Arabia and Iran.

And Iran has elections and a parliamentary system.

The Monarch is Sovereign. The Government is the Monarch’s Government. The Monarch can reject the choice as PM. However, to continuously reject the PM choice would cause a crisis. The choice of PM is “the will of the people.”

Yep. Childish. Not wrong or out to lunch, but not furthering any understanding.

Frankly, I don’t care how another country chooses its government as long as the government is stable (liked by its citizens) and doesn’t cause troubles for me and mine.

Which nation is a bigger problem?

We need working hands, in all parts of society.

They come here because it improves their lives, and the lives of their family.

They live in peace, no one bothers them.

We do not have all the silly cliques found in the West.

As long as they have a job, they are welcome to stay.

Every employee has to be provided with accommodation, transport, food and health insurance.

Non is a burden on the country.

Their employers pay all of this.

You don't have a job, go home.

It is practically impossible for an illegal to live here.

And that is how it should be.

And the end result is safety in our society.

Very little crime.

In America, even the bloody ex-president is committing crimes.

You know, THE MAGA ARSEHOLE?

And on the other end you have an ex-waitress trying to ram her stupid commie rules down your bloody throats! rotflmo

How is it that the Republican party just depends on one guy to collect all the votes? SHould the Party Leadership think tank not be the ones to rally and garner the support? Should it not have been Trump who should have provided clear directions for the rest of the party?

Blaming McCarthy is like blaming the pauper for being hungry.

The radical obstructionist strategy of Gingrich, Rove & Cruz is just snowballing to hell. No use blaming McCarthy.

If he can’t get these votes…he can’t lead the House anyway.

If McCarthy gets the vote, he'll probably be the most feckless (for lack of a better word) in history. But he's not feckless enough for the radicals in the so-called freedom caucus.

Jim Jordon of course meets the feckless criteria all the way through.

That's the GOP.

Im surprised Trump isn't yelling that the process is rigged and filing law suits as the count shows 20 votes from his sicophants , aliens taking control of whatever they use to count or whatever.

Its profoundly worrying there are even that number...
