Among those named were former generals and admirals. Two long-term investigations disclosed that the highest-ranking officer was retired General Jim Mattis. Mattis served as former US president Donald Trump's defence secretary. He also served as a military advisor to the Gulf nation in 2015, returning as defence chief in 2017. Mattis had also previously worked as a senior counsellor at a Washington-based consulting firm called The Cohen Group. Its co-president, Robert Tyrer, revealed to the Washinton Post that Mattis advised Emiratis on "the operational, tactical, informational and ethical aspects" of military operations, but that he did not request or accept any type of payment from the Emirati government besides reimbursement for travel expenses. Under the Freedom of Information Act, the Washington Post was able to obtain 4,000 documents. Through these documents, it was revealed that 15 other former high-ranking military officials worked directly with Saudi Arabia's ministry of defence. Among them was former US president Barack Obama's national security adviser Marine General James L. Jones. Jones began working in Saudi Arabia in 2017, where he was able to enlist the help of several former senior Pentagon officials. According to the newspaper, Jones said he was approached by the Kingdom's government as its Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was searching "if there was something that we could do to help them in transforming their Ministry of Defense". Documents reveal that four unnamed retired officers received six-figure salaries, from US$200,000 to US$300,000 to advise Saudi Arabia's ministry of defence. I understand party policy but I find this entire position a little unsettling. We vote representatives to represent us as a local entity. I do not believe any representative should always vote on party lines regardless of conservative or liberal. These parties are so polarized neither can see an opportunity in a another's path. Representatives are basically held hostage / black balled by a party position and not their own ideals or possibly the people that elected them. I think this uprising is OK. We all know that if the UAE would be attacked, they would call on the USA to help them, and we would do so. I suppose one could argue Israel, but I think a good debater could show some serious holes there as well. The UAE is doing what a lot of us wish the USA would do for immigration. They try and stay out of their citizen’s pockets to a good extent. Yes, you need to be related to someone to get political power, but frankly, statistically your odds of the average Emirati getting a high level political job are much higher than the odds of the average American… just based on population. As long as it doesn’t interfere with our national security interests, who cares how they choose their leaders if they are happy? We have no issues with monarchies (UK, Monaco, etc.) no issues with religious states (Vatican, Israel) so why the angst about the UAE? In an absolute sense, no the UK is not… but isn’t the head of state the king in Britain? Yes, the prime minister and the parliament are running the country- but isn’t the House of Lords an item as well? Are the emirates absolute monarchies? I thought they had some sort of electoral process - it’s not absolute primogeniture is it? It sounds like they do have some voting, and each emirate has its own government, in addition to a federal one. Yes, I can find that it’s not really “fair” to everyone, but then again, the proof is in the pudding… the UAE is certainly better run and has more rights than its neighbors Saudi Arabia and Iran. I think the UAE has the best immigration laws in the world today. Everyone is welcome, as long as they can look after themselves. We need working hands, in all parts of society. They come here because it improves their lives, and the lives of their family. They live in peace, no one bothers them. We do not have all the silly cliques found in the West. As long as they have a job, they are welcome to stay. Every employee has to be provided with accommodation, transport, food and health insurance. Non is a burden on the country. Their employers pay all of this. You don't have a job, go home. It is practically impossible for an illegal to live here. And that is how it should be. And the end result is safety in our society.
