Sometimes the ARPF needs a topic just for fun.

One of my favorite topics and activities is catfishing.

A political thread herein got diverted with the topic of catfishing, so I started a new thread on that specific topic.

Here's some of the previous discussion, edited to remove political and for brevity:

I end up 'training' them to come to the edge with floating pond fish pellets then net the bastards. Still got about a dozen to get out yet.

To catch catfish with corn, first sour the corn by soaking it in a bucket with water, some sugar and yeast. Maybe add a can of beer. Let 1t ferment for about a week. It will sink so use it for chum. Bait the hook with something like Charlies stink bait.

Cubes of ZOTE soap works well on a trotline, left over night.

So, bait with something stinky and fish on the bottom.

We catch them here on chunks of processed meat or oily fish, anything smelly/ oily, but these are European Wels catfish that get huge, 5 ft isn’t uncommon and they have been caught up to 7-8 ft and 100kg.

Jeffee's correct about the old time soap, it has organic fat as base ingredient. It also has additives to make it smell good to us. It must not smell bad to catfish. I've read the the big bars of Ivory soap work, but I've only used ZOTE, both pink and white - I see no difference in results. Some say there is a difference, but I haven't witnessed it.

It's easy to deal with and cheap and clean. Just cut into chunks and bait up. In my experience I have only caught fish using soap on trotlines. It works all year here. I speculate the reason is the trotlines I use are baited overnight, and they feed best at night. I bait up late afternoon and get off the river before dark, and get up early to check lines. My theory is that the soap needs to soak a while and disburse the scent.

I have caught catfish on bare hooks recently baited with soap and all but the sent washed away. So, when I don't plan on checking lines on a particular day, I remove the hooks the previous day and leave the main line until I'm ready to quit for a while..

Another thing or two --- in my experience I've caught practically all channel catfish on soap. Maybe a blue or two - I don't remember for sure. But I've caught zero flathead on soap. So I figure it won't work well on all species. I've tried cut bait, chicken livers and breast soaked in jello, and other commercial sent concoctions, fish oil, etc. and for channel catfish in this region nothing produces as good as ZOTE.

Another thing is that soap doesn't catch turtles or gar or mud fish. Cut bait does.

Cut bait will catch most species, but blues best and flathead sometimes. I've had good luck with the heads off bream or crappie - leave the guts attached. But that catches turtles in summer too.

Live bait is for flatheads, and the big channel and blues.

When I fish with a rod and reel, unless I'm after flatheads, I use those plastic worm-like thingys dipped in a stink bait, refreshed often. There's several on the market, Secret 7, Charlies, and others. I hate treble hooks - too hard to remove. I use circle hooks, Carolina or Santee Cooper rigs. That way I can remove the hook from the fish with a tool and a flick of my wrist, straight into the cooler or livewell or released and not have to touch it right then.

When I was a kid, we used to hunt for the catalpa worms and go to great trouble to get them. Of course they are seasonal, and they are not as plentiful as they used to be - too many ag pesticides and such. I still have catalpa trees in my yard. Crawfish are really good bait too. Of course there is always earthworms or night crawlers. We used to grunt them out of the soil. I have used tomato worms too, and grass hoppers.

Soap and bait purchased at the local bait shop is much easier. Big Grin

You are all just plain amateurs!

Our trackers in Tanzania catch catfish by hand.

I shot a hippo, we dragged to the shore.

The water around it was full of of blood.

The catfish were almost biting our feet!

The boys got into it, and caught as many as they wanted!

All by hand!

I had a buddy when I was younger that used to concoct the most god-awful stink-bait you can imagine. I don't even know what was in it. He'd mix it up in a bucket and let it sit outside for a few days. It was a gooey slimey foul-smelling mix with the consistency of mayonnaise that we would drag sponge hooks through. We caught a lot of catfish with it. Mostly channel cats, some blues, some flatheads.

Thanks Saeed. That's interesting.

Next hippo I shoot in the river near here, I'll drag it to shore and let it rot.

That should provide catfish for several months.

The racoons and gators will enjoy it too.

When I was a kid, you could buy Catawba worms in bait shops ( not anymore) and used them for bream. Pinched their heads off and turned them inside out with small hooks. Bream loved them! And I’ve used small live bream as bait for the large channel cats in my pond. Only problem is you have to let them run forever to actually swallow the bream and set the hook.

Zote soap, eh? Will the turtles leave that stuff alone?

I just finished a marathon rabbit butchering series of days. I run the gut bucket out to the pond fish and turtles. The bluegills have a 'community' system of ripping up the intestines to eat pieces of them. I never see the catfish joining in. Nor the bass.

Experiences vary.

Used tampons, yuck. Panty hose - yes, preferably new. Smiler

Actually stink baits aren't necessary. But there are so-called dip baits and punch baits. As far as I know they use natural ingredients in the formula. Either way, I use a stick to dunk the bait.

I made my own formula using ZOTE soap as the base but haven't tried it yet.

Here's a guy with how-to advice who apparently has eaten lots of catfish:

How I catch catfish with punch bait!

===========================================

Also, I dislike using treble hooks.

Here's why:

Unhooking a Fish (Dehooking)

Here's another video of dehooking without touching the fish. This is why I use circle hooks. This dehooking technique will work with most all size and species fish, including large halibut. It will work with sharks too and no need to bring them aboard. Of course you don't flip a shark, and use a long tool.

I hate to see on many youtube videos where the guy pretends to take such care with catch and release, yet he's let the fish flop all over the deck, has his hands all over it, up the gills, etc.

I started this video at a particular spot on purpose. I use the specific dehooker shown most often for catfish. Note how small it is. It works great for panfish and baitfish too. Just drop them right in the baitwell.

Note how the guy uses his left hand.

Yes. That's part of the point in using ZOTE for catfish bait.

As I said before, I figure the soap is slow to draw attention so it needs to soak a while. I've never caught a fish with it on a rod and reel, only trotlines overnight.

When I was a teen, my uncle had a pontoon boat and we used to anchor or tie it up and fish at night. We caught all sorts of fish that way.

I haven't done that for many years, but want to do it again.

Night fishing has evolved over the years. Now there's green lights. Very effective.

I don't want to launch or retrieve or travel in a boat at night. So, if I do it again I'll just stay out all night and camp on the boat.

I missed an opportunity to buy a tri-toon 24' platform for making a cabin boat on. I regret that. But I have something else now but it needs rebuilding. I haven't got around to it yet.

Yukon Delta:

Like this guy in the short video, I got the boat free, and paid 350$ for the trailer. I barely made it home with it. The boat has hurricane damage but I'm sure the hull can be made good as new, maybe better.

Here's a sample:

https://youtube.com/shorts/IxS...?si=rLgNQLHahT6vcuFc

I think it will be perfect for catfishing at night.

Supposedly catfish like to loiter in muskrat houses or other dpressions in river banks, etc and back their way in. So you find the hole and jam your hand and arm in and hopefully hit their open mouth. Then just jerk them out. Takes more stones than I have tho.

Yeah, I don't get noodling but it is a thing here.

Best approach to fishing for cats is a farm tank of decent size. And, fried catfish is a damn delicacy. Very tasty. Dredged in egg, milk and then cornmeal. They do have some bones. Some folks say if the oil is hot enough, it dissolves the bones and makes them eatable too.

Cats are damn good eating. Lots of folks disagree. They are bottom feeders.

Lot of seafood restaurants agree and offer catfish as a regular dish here in Texas. They are delicious.

Catfish are great eating. 2 cups of cornmeal, 1 cup of flour mixed e my personal seasoning.

Dry, egg wash, back in dry. Place on ware rack, When ready deep fry in Canola oil at 375. Hit w sea salt as you remove from oil to wire rack.

I’ve brined it in sea salt and buttermilk over night. Rinse off and pat dry.

We cut the belly fat off the filets.

My fear of noodling was getting needle stuck in me.

I don’t like eating catfish.

One day on our way from Shreveport in Louisiana back to Houston, we stopped at a restaurant on the way.

Apparently they only served catfish!

My friends started laughing, I asked the lady who owned the restaurant if I could have French fries.

She was so kind and offered me chicken!

It was not on the menu.

She spent most of her time at our table, laughing at stories I was telling about Dubai!

I told her we had no catfish in my country, but we had camel fish!

I was the only one she kept calling HONEY! clap

catfish farming:

All those catfish in the restaurants are raised on commercial catfish farms. As far as I know, they are all channel catfish.

There are advantages and disadvantages for diners.

Mostly they are raised in water that's relatively clean. What I mean by clean is far less toxic pollution such as commonly in most rivers. Their flavor is all about what they are fed. Some catfish food is questionable as to quality. It's about production. Sometimes they change the feed a month or so before harvest to enhance the flavor. ???

The fish are mostly harvested when they reach the size to get good filets.

Much of what could be criticized about catfish from the commercial harvest could be said about chicken farming and processing too.

The problem with wild caught catfish is the water they live in. Pollution is rampant. That's why I don't keep the large catfish. Channel catfish, 2 to 3 lbs, blues and flathead maybe up to 10 lbs.

In Georgia there are pubic fishing lakes and ponds, stocked, and according to the brochure published by DNR such lakes rate as some of the cleanest. I haven't fished there yet.

Yes, I agree the flathead are best eating and also fun to catch.

From what I've read and remember, the flathead is native to the Mississippi watershed. It was introduced elsewhere, sometimes intentionally. It was introduce in the Altamaha for example. At first DNR tried to control them but gave up. Now it is one of the main targets for fishermen. It is considered invasive and it does impact native species. They are rather easy to catch.

When I filet a channel catfish, I cut off all the yellow meat on the edges of the filet. It may not make a difference, but I do it anyway.

Supposedly the larger channel cats get the less desirable they are for table fare while flatheads are tasty no matter what size they get to.

That has been my experience with channel cat.

But I haven't caught any BIG flathead. Those I've caught so far range 5 to 10 lbs or so. I caught one about 28 lbs, and it tasted good. Smiler There is a lot of good white meat on a flathead. Even the belly meat is good. Little to none of the yellow fat meat like on channel.

I'm planning a camping/fishing trip to the Altamaha River when the weather cools a bit. I plan on staying at the Altamaha Regional Park.
https://www.bing.com/search?q=...&FORM=SSQNT1&PC=DCTS
Last I checked, reservations need to be made well in advance. It's a popular place for hunters too.

The reason for that location is they have an excellent campground, hookups and such, good boat ramp, and for guests they have boat slips, included in the camp fees. So, I don't have to launch and retrieve the boat every time I want to go out. Perfect for tending trotlines, jug lines or rod and reel.

It flows through wildlife management areas, so it's rather wild.

I have never fished the Altamaha, but have wanted to for many years. I like fishing rivers, but the Altamaha is unfamiliar and it is powerful.

It seems that the most popular method of catfishing on the Altamaha is limb lines. I don't do limb lines, not because they aren't effective, but because people steal the fish. I don't go out on the river at night and I don't like going out before sunrise.

I do short trotlines, maybe 5 hooks, for flathead. That way I can hide the line, and I put them out in places very similar to where limblines would be good. I suspend the main line off the bottom at least two feet, using weights and submerged floats.

I use Sleeve Swivels spaced about 5 ft apart, like these in 5/0, with live bait.

https://catchalltackle.com/sleeve-swivels-pack-of-20/

I use clips similar to these so I can detach the drop line and hook from the main line easily.

https://catchalltackle.com/lon...query=trotline+clips

I use tarred three-strand nylon main line, heavy enough to not be so abrasive on my hands.

As I said, I leave the lines all night. The swivels help a lot to keep the fish from wrapping the drop line up in a knot and twisting off.

If you managed to get them all out what are the chances that they will find their way back in somehow? I have a small pond and it’s full of native silverfish which have never been added to the water. I can only assume spawn came in on aquatic birds maybe?

Here's something interesting and informative about the flathead catfish as an invasive species on the Satilla River in Georgia:

https://georgiawildlife.com/flathead-removal-project

Satilla River Flathead Catfish Removal Project

Excerpt:

In 1996, the first confirmed captures of flatheads from the Satilla River were reported to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GA DNR). When observing these newly-discovered specimens, fisheries biologists noticed distinctive fin-clip markings mirroring fin-clip markings placed on fish released in the Altamaha River the previous year in 1995 (Bonvechio et al. 2009 & 2011). Consequently, it is likely the initial specimens captured in the Satilla were moved from the Altamaha River and released illegally into the Satilla.

Since being introduced into the Satilla, flathead catfish have expanded throughout the river, having been documented as far downstream as the freshwater-saltwater wedge (brackish waters of Woodbine) and as far upstream as Waycross.

I suggested to Ann that it may not be the catfish doing the damage to the shore, such as nutria.

But she didn't respond to that.

Also, I did this search:

One thing stood out:

Some species, like armored catfish, can cause significant erosion by burrowing into shorelines.

oops, I see that she did respond on the other thread:

The channel cats like to dig burrows into the banks. I've sat and watched them do it. Eventually the burrows collapse and a portion of the bank slides into the pond. What they do explains their enormous heads.

Ann and jeffe, I copied this quote from another thread where it was off-topic there.

It's on-topic here.

And I appreciate the informative response.

They indeed look like channel catfish.

I gave my reasons to doubt that they were channel catfish from the clues you gave.

But pictures say a lot.

They don't look too skinny. I just never heard of channel catfish burrowing. Learn something new.

And jeffee, a few years ago when I checked a trotline, there was a chain and some wire caught up in it. Obviously it had pulled loose from a rig for shocking fish. I kept the chain and now use it as part of my trailer safety chain setup.

It's a redneck pastime hereabouts, but it's illegal.

I don't appreciate people shocking my catfish. I moved the line.

Oh, and BTW, Ann, if you read this post, I'm interested in the specs on that pistol in the photo.

I like single action revolvers, especially a 44 mag with reduced handloads.

Ann, you have given several clues about the problem in your pond.

1. They "like to dig burrows into the banks"
2. "their enormous heads"
3. "The problem is the armor on these catfish"

You have called them "The channel cats".

I have said, as nicely as I can, that I think those "cats" are not channel catfish.

I've explained further in the thread I started on this topic about catfishing, but you have ignored it.

First, channel catfish don't burrow like you have described. And they don't have armor. The only time I have seen channel catfish with disproportionately large heads is when they are starving in a private pond. Their body is emaciated but the heads don't shrink.

I think your catfish are an invasive species of which some are called walking catfish, and they do burrow the shore, and they are armored, and some do have big heads.

hmm, Ann ... my second cousin, in the UP, used to use this for his "fishing"

No, they are stocked catfish.

They don't even reproduce. If they do, no fry have ever survived the bass, crappie and blue gills (yet I see plenty of their offspring out there). I have never seen any catfish offspring but a few years ago I had added more to the pond before I figured out the damage they do. They start digging in their second/third year. I presume to make nests. I placed several large hollow logs in the pond but they don't seem to use them in preference for collapsing banks.

The previous owner also stocked catfish. There is one old bitch that's been there for the 12 years that I have owned the farm. It's very big and too smart. It knows I will swipe the net when they come to feed on fish food. I like a challenge. You should see the stink eye that thing gives me.

We have 'fish trucks' that hit the feed stores regularly where you can buy game fish for your ponds here. Sadly, they never have cool stuff like yellow perch. My pond is too warm for trout.

They sell channel cats, black bass (largemouth), crappie, a variety of bluegill, redear sunfish, hybrid sunfish, golden shiner minnows, small stuff.

I'd like to find one that has bullfrog tadpoles. I don't eat frogs, just like hearing them. There are red-ear sliders and a pair of snapping turtles also in the pond. A few northern water snakes. One of the snappers is relatively tame, I rescued it from a roadside in the local four corners town several years back. It comes to feed with the fish when they hear my tractor coming. Same turtle sits at the shoreline staring at me when I do go fishing. It waits for me to give it treats. I don't eat turtles either.

The channel catfish are good eating and if it weren't for the digging issue I would keep adding some every couple of years. The pond will do just fine without them though.

As soon as things slow down around here I will spend some time at the pond.

If you managed to get them all out what are the chances that they will find their way back in somehow? I have a small pond and it’s full of native silverfish which have never been added to the water. I can only assume spawn came in on aquatic birds maybe?
