War 70-80 years ago was different. The intent then was to get a military and society to capitulate; No boundaries!. Now it appears to take down a military or government. The Russians may be holding on to old school thought.
Really nothing good about any of it.

I read today that 60% of the flooded land is in Russian controlled Crimea. I think they shot themselves in the foot. The photos show a massive explosion took place over a large area. I don’t see how a few Ukrainian sappers managed to sneak in and do that amount of damage in enemy territory. coffee

JDollar,

I remember years ago you responding very strongly about Sherman and his March thru Georgia, would you mind speaking some more to that?
If I remember right, you mentioned your granny's thoughts.

Aragggh.

Many in my ancestry family died in the War. Enough survived to make me. There are graves all around here. When I was a kid I knew of some. Since then many farmers have simply vanished them, for the sake of their irrigation equipment. They plow over the graves.

It was my great grandmother who was about 5 years old at the time. She related her experiences to me in the mid 1950’s. Sherman’s troops killed her father, who was an amputee from an earlier battle, raped her mother, stole or killed their livestock, burned their house and marched on. Sherman’s scorched earth policy at work. I was only about 7-8 at the time but remember it vividly. Times have changed but war atrocities haven’t.

I don't know how history shows it in text, but the history of southerners is that Sherman's march from Atlanta to Savanna was awful. He either couldn't control his troops of he intentionally let them run amuck. They weren't all bunched up, but spread out like a bunch of terrorists, as I understand it. Sherman did say that his intentions was to teach the southern rebels a lesson they would never forget. He succeeded in that.

One can travel that region of Georgia today and still feel the vibes.

That whole war was a tragedy beyond human grasp of reality.

The Russian war upon Ukraine is just as bad, maybe worse given the amount of death and destruction and the weapons available, and the potential to escalate, and devolve into something truely worldly shattering.

Mostly sorry I asked and sorry I read Dollars reply, you know what I mean.

Yes, the war was a tragedy beyond grasp, but which war isn't? More to the point, why haven't we learned and evolved?

The same story that JDollar relates has happened in in every conflict before and since. Why since? I'm to understand that the 1940's Germans ran to surrender to the Americans to avoid Russian capture. The Afghans were so enamored with the Western Infidels 20 year "Introduction of Democracy" that they reverted to Taliban 100% before the final withdrawal of American troops.

Sherman said, "war is cruelty and you cannot refine it; and those who brought war into our country deserve all the cursed and maledictions a people can pour out."

Frankly, I'm certain Sherman lived with and accepted JDollars family curses.

Here's some more history relating the Sherman:

The immediate effect of Sherman's order provided for the settlement of roughly 40,000 Black Americans (both refugees and locals who had been under Union army administration in the Sea Islands since 1861). This lifted the burden of supporting the freedpeople from Sherman's army as it turned north into South Carolina.

Sherman's Field Order No. 15 - New Georgia Encyclopedia

What did Sherman do after civil war?
William T. Sherman | American Battlefield Trust
After the war, Sherman remained in the military and eventually rose to the rank of full general, serving as general-in-chief of the army from 1869 to 1883. Praised for his revolutionary ideas on "total warfare," William T. Sherman died in 1891.

What was Sherman's influence on the outcome of the war?
Through the employment of a scorched-earth policy, Sherman successfully disrupted the flow of supply of Confederate forces, broke the will of the civilian South to support the Confederate cause, and thus, hastened the end of the civil war.

Who was promised 40 acres and a mule?
Forty acres and a mule was part of Special Field Orders No. 15, a wartime order proclaimed by Union General William Tecumseh Sherman on January 16, 1865, during the American Civil War, to allot land to some freed families, in plots of land no larger than 40 acres (16 ha).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...%20acres%20(16%20ha).

Did anyone get 40 acres and a mule?
The government didn't keep its promise of 40 acres and a mule. Following President Abraham Lincoln's assassination on April 15, 1865, President Andrew Johnson rescinded Field Order 15 and returned to Confederate owners the 400,000 acres of land—“a strip of coastline stretching from Charleston, South Carolina to the St.Nov 9, 2022

Today there are many black Americans still living on the Sea Islands, some land owners, and many churches.

And, given the massive destruction in Ukraine particularly, how will all that be repaired and who is going to pay for it?

All the deaths - can't be redeemed.

For what?
