SaeedFinally Got Our New CNC Lathe Up And Running -Photos Added
We finally got our brand new EMCOTURN E25 up and running.
And what a great machine it is too.
Much quieter than our 20 year old machine, and much more consistent too.
Our old machine used the SIEMENS system, and this one uses the FANUC system.
We had to redesign all our bullets, and all set for production.
I am making a short run of each now, and will post photos later on.

Very nice
Maybe now you can make some blaser quality gun parts

How about making some hybrid brass 13 degree to 67% conical nose bullets with a hydro bowl nose? Should be an amazing performer in damage and depth of penetration.

Bill/OregonSaeed, I am really happy for you. You are so blessed to be able to pursue this passion to the extent that you can. Thanks for sharing the fruits of what comes out of your shop, your range and your field experience.
There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.

Congratulations on the upgrade. Our school teaches Fanuc programming to our secondary students. It is amazing what they will do!

Frankly, I see no use to some of the claims being made for bullets, and their performance.
We have quite an extensive experience with the original Barnes X, and they performed great.
I designed our to duplicate their performance, and that is what happened with our Walterhog bullets.
Extremely accurate, and extremely deadly.
What can one ask from a bullet??
I can control the depth of penetration by altering the size of the hollow point, and its depth.
I can shoot a buffalo running away in the rear end, and find the bullet in the neck.
This year we were hunting buffalo.
We followed a herd all morning, and caught up with them.
Shot the first one in the classic broadside shot, and he ran off.
We left him and ran after the rest trying to shoot one or two more.
Shot another one, and the third was disappearing into the forest, with only his backside showing.
A Walterhog in his rear end dropped him in his tracks.
Within a few minutes we had three buffalo bulls down.
This can only happen if one has total confidence in both his rifle and ammo.

SaeedHere is our machine.
Sample bullets I just ran in it.
264, 140 grains run.
I separate them by weight as you can see.

Head TraumaLooks great
What type of coating do you use, spray on moly?
If you can, please share your bullet coating procedure.
I have been using tungsten disulfide in a tumbler,
a lot less messy than spray on moly, works great.
Thank you

SaeedI am using a commercial dry molly spray.
Works great.
Our procedure is to degrease the bullets by putting them in Acetone.
Dry them and spray them
I use large plastic chopping boards I drill suitable size holes in on our milling machine.
I will post pictures.

zrpSaeed, did you happen to take any video while turning the bullets ?

georgeldBeautiful work!
Wish I had access to a CNC.
Thanks for showing us your new toy
and the results.

We did.
But you are not going to see much because of the lubricant spray behind the glass.

RIPSadly lacking a .458-caliber Walterhog.
450-grain weight would be cool.

Rip ...

Walterhog bullets.
Can you give them in Dubai to me or are they considered ammo? Would be cool to try them in my 375 ruger.

They don't work in Blasers

SaeedThese are 44 Magnum bullets

SaeedGot asked how long we have been making our own bullets.
We have been casting bullets for at least 40 years.
That was long after we discovered when we were kids - and ran out of air gun pellets - that we can make our own.
We opened up shotgun shells - normally #3 or 4, and put two pellets in chewing gum, and loaded the air rifles.
Shots as effective as pellets!
We also made bullets on a Corbin Hydrolic press for sometime.
Trouble with these was that one has to have a set of dies for each caliber, and weight.
Then we decided to get a BOXFORD table top lathe.
We made some bullets on it, but, it was so inaccurate that it is not possible to get bullets exactly the same!
We then decide, about 20 years ago, to go the professional way.
We got an EMCO 325 CNC lathe, and that has worked for us for 20 years.
Then it started breaking down, and parts - electronic controllers - were very hard to find.
And when you find one, very hard to set up correctly.
We decided to retire that machine, and got an EMCOTURN E25.
This is a much more accurate lathe, and I can turn literally hundreds of bullets without any minor adjustments, which I had to do to keep to our very close tolerance with the old machine.
With a CNC lathe, we can make any caliber, any bullet weight.
All we need change is the chuck and the diameter of the copper or brass rod.
Another advantage with a CNC lathe is that I can make different size bullets without too much hassle.
I have some friends who shoot 303 British rifles.
Bullet diameter for these is 0.311.
I do not have to design a new bullet for these, as all I need do is alter the tool offset for our 0.308 bullets, and get these made.
Same goes for 0.264, 0.277, 0.284 etc.
All is needed is adjusting the tool offset, and get any of these.

enfieldsparesI had a Corbin too. The CSP-1. I made .455 Webley Mk II, Mk III, Mk IV and, yes, .455 Mk VI. I also had a set of their dies to make .380 Mk II bullets. I sold it all long ago but, my, it made very very good bullets.

JiriHi Saeed:
Awesome bullets. It is great you can make them by yourself.
I would like to ask you, what is the main purpose of the shape of revolver bullets?
Jiri
27 January 2020, 14:41
SaeedWe use the 44 caliber bullets in semi auto pistols - Desert Eagles - and found this design feeds better.
And for simplicity we made the 357 the same.
28 January 2020, 18:21
JiriThank you Saeed. Now I understand the shape.
It is really great you can make your bullets in house.

A few years ago, we bought some copper rods, and some were not so good.
These were kept at the workshop to be used for other purposes than bullets.
Well, I decided to make some 338 caliber bullets, and thought of trying to use these rod.
Most of them were very good and have no problems, others have these faults as you can see.
The one on the right has a minute crack visible.
I can detect these even without seeing any visible signs, as I weigh each bullet made, and any variation of over a 1/2 grain is suspect.
30 January 2020, 14:41
JiriInteresting. Never seen copper rods with such cracks.
Did you ever try making bullets from brass? (as Lehigh Defense, Cutting Edge etc. do)?
Jiri
30 January 2020, 15:01
SaeedYes, have made many bullets out of brass.
In fact, we buy our stock half copper and half brass.

boom stickSaeed, can you scale up a high BC bullet to 12 gauge? I am curious about a 12 Gauge From Hell as a supersonic cartridge and obviously subsonic as well.

We can make any diameter, and shape, bullet as long as it does not exceed 1 inch in diameter.
01 February 2020, 08:13
boom stickWell how about a .729” javelin?
Something like this?
Give them to Rob or RIP to test for around 20k FPE! A super legal and lethal 12 gauge!

Wrong shape for a hunting bullet.
01 February 2020, 09:49
boom stickThese are the MTH (Match, Tactical, Hunting). There is a hollow point that expands down to low velocities to high velocity.
01 February 2020, 12:05
SaeedI think that HP is too small for comfort.
For reliable expansion, we had to make the HP 2.5mm in diameter.
Also, I think these might not fit in some magazines.
Ours are slightly flat nose, and I seat them out all the way to just fit in the magazine.
01 February 2020, 20:31
boom stickI think most of these are single loaded but the 12 Gauge idea is obviously a breech loading option.
02 February 2020, 20:18
Saeed
This is a problem that crops up when the rod is not straight, and the bullet being made is close to the diameter of the rod.
These are 308 caliber bullets, being made from 8mm rod.
What I found is that certain sizes come slightly over size, and others come slightly under size.
04 February 2020, 17:21
JiriBut you can shoot it too and check if there is any accuracy issue or not ;-)
Jiri
04 February 2020, 21:25
boom stickYou have a great opportunity to prank the likes of Walter and friends with making bullets that are wildly inaccurate... just load bullets where the defects or subterfuge is below the crimp.

Fire and forget self homing bullets. Wow :-)
Now you have to put "cleaning" on few too ;-)
Really nice work Saeed.
