It wasn't all that long ago that a whale or other cetacean incidentally caught in a net or stranded on a beach or in an inland bay or river was seen as a gift from God to the local inhabitants who'd cut em' up and eat em' and use the other products.

It's called passive whaling, where stranded or dying whales are utilized.

It is still seen as such in parts of the world, like New Zealand where the Maoris have legal claim to some stranded whales.

And there are conflicts between the Gore Tex clad whale saving white folk who want to push the sperm or pilot whales back out to sea. Making certain their exploits are captured on film................

And the Maori, who show up with their trucks and flensing knives all set to butcher up some whales.

I suspect the natives with long sharp knives win that one.
