I'm not familiar with them, and, AFAIK, they are not available locally so I'll take your word for it.

My mother is in Germany now for a wedding of one of our friends. My cousin is taking care of her. At her age she still could not be disuaded. More power to her I say. Point here;any recommendations of what she could bring me back, beer wise from Germany? Something that I can't get here.R/E.I like a Newcastle in a dark + /or a light pilsner.Any input appreciated;not every day some one goes to Germany to make the beer run.

When I was in Turkey in the early '60's coke was .25 and beer was .10 at our little NCO club. The beer choices were Lowenbrau, Becks, Heineken and others. Don't know why they bothered to ship coke.
When I lived in Golden, Co. the workers at Coors drank Schlitz.
Living here in Oregon it almost seems like there is a micro brewery in every town. They've certainly come a long way from glorified home brew where they began. My favorite sipping beer is Black Butte Porter from Deschutes Brewing Co. When it comes to gulping, Miller Genuine Draft which I also use in my Deer Camp Margaritas.
Drank some Tusker and Kilimanjaro when in Africa. Being in Africa it was great.

Unless you live in only the most remote area you can get the best dark beers in the world right here I would say. The best hefeweizens still come ONLY from Germany though. Weihenstephaner is the oldest brewery in existence and makes arguably the best hefe in the world....and it's available everywhere here including the dunkel which is the dark version.

Thanks Norton. There are a lot to choose from here these days. For a light Pilsner I like the Bitburger Brau,+ that is where our friends are,in Bitburg. However I can buy that at Whole Foods Mkt. I recall that a few years ago when I was in on the group buy from Dale on the 9.3x72 Chapuis dbls.,he mentioned bringing beer back with him as long as it did not over load his weight restrictions that included the rifles, ammo, accessories, etc.Just a curiosity really.

WEll, in spite of my inhibitions but because I have a long standing respect for Norton's opinions, I ordered a Corona at a good local Mexican restaurant we frequent where we took our daughter for lunch, since we fear the quality of good Tex-Mex will be sadly lacking in Madison, Wis. To my surprise, being the first one I've had since many dove shoots in Mexico, I found Corona to be a refreshing lager, much superior to Lone STar. Certainly not one of my favorites, but not a bad beer. My hats off to Norton and I apologize for my snide remarks regarding his tastes in beer. Rated on the first page.

Hey, it wasn't that good. I rank it below PBR draft if that tells you anything.

If by Haze you mean Haze from Treehouse then grab it.....one of the best DIPAs on the market. There's a bunch of others on that list that are winners too. The Franziskaner and Weihenstephaner hefes are top notch.

Gato- when in Madison or anywhere in Wisconsin really, "Tex-mex" does not exist. Here in Wisconsin we eat bratwurst and cheese curds and for the most part, we drink Wisconsin beer. Next time go to Dotty's or the Old Fashioned and have a New Glarus, Capital, or in my neck of the woods-Leinenkugel's.

I'm sure I will have the misfortune of visiting Madison in the future since my oldest daughter is now employed there. Besides Tex-Mex, I fed her fried catfish while she was visiting us. I skipped the barbecue because she went to school in Austin and had enough exposure to great Q there. Madison is just under 900 miles from us.

BTW "Tex-Mex" is a universal phrase covering the style of cooking developed by Mexicans to fit Texas tastes. It is only peripherally related to real Mexican food, which is even harder to find in the US than Tex-Mex and finding either one done right is hard to do.

I went to eat at my local (local in E Tx is anywhere within 50 mi or so one way) favorite Thai restaurant, Thai Lanna, just on N. side I-30 in Mt. Pleasant. a pleasant 45 mi drive and the only Thai restaurant I'm aware of closer than Longview, about 90 mi, in E. Tx. Much to my surprise they have gotten a liquor license and now serve beer. I promptly ordered a couple of bottles of Sinha for myslef and wife. Ah, the mere smell brings back memories, best untold, of Patpong in Bangkok and Pattya. Highly recommended, both restaurant and beer. For some odd reason the bottles came in 11.2 oz sizes, as opposed to the liter size in Thailand. Try it, you'll like it, and the beer makes it better.

Tas, Pelican is one of my favorite brewers. Widmer is another Oregon favorite, as is Anchor from that state to the south that shall go unnamed.
