Beer Ratings.... Login/Join

We can all blame Bill G. and other demented individuals who claimed to like Lone Star Beer for this. I have kidded him quite a bit about his choice of beers and had not tried Lone Star for a while. So....last night we went to Buffalo Wild Wings, a fairly frequent dinner choice for us, for some wings n brew. They had 24 beers on draft and lo and behold, Lone Star, was one of them. So, after quickly downing a couple of 22 oz Sam Adams Lager, to get my courage up to the sticking point, I thought, "be true to your goals, try the damn stuff" and ordered a pint of Lone Star. I am happy to report that my initial responses were dead on, and the current Lone Star might be good for pig swill, but doesn't reach my ideas of a good beer for human consumption. It is very light, with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Very similar taste to Sol and Pacifico, 2 Mexican beers that I don't like for the same reasons. I left half the pint in the glass so the next horse would have something to aim at.

At any rate, because of that sad experience, I am going to initiate, Gatogordo's Beer Ratings List below. Now, I am not a beer expert, so these numbers are my ratings as a result of my tastings. Feel free to disagree, as each person has his own response to beers, as is perfectly obvious by the ones who like Lone Star.

I've thought about this for a while, and, being sober, decided that a 100 point scale would cover the territory, and, I'm arbitrarily dividing it into 50s, the ones I like and find drinkable, will score above 50 and the other kind, will be below. Since I'm just starting this, I am only going to post brands that I drink regularly or ones that I try. So without further ado.....ta, da, below is Gatogordos Beer Ratings.

Gatogordo's Beer Ratings, in alphabetical order, 1 being the absolute worst, and 100 being ambrosial. I will add to this list as I drink and rate beers. From my Q experience, rating as you consume, will change your perceptions AND it is possible I may go back and change the numbers as time and beer pass. Since I don't drink bad beers by choice, the list will be heavily skewed to plus 50 ratings, and those I think are in beer hell will only be added as I try them for scientific purposes. Or, they are free somewhere.

Angry Orchard Extra Crisp Cider....66...NR 5% (very sweet, like biting into apple pie, an acquired taste)
Armadillo 9 band IPA....72....3.78 6% (very hoppy, too much for me to really like it)
Bass Pale Ale...76....3.34 5.1%(in bottles, served in glass cold, very fine, worth the money)
Blue Moon Belgian White...55 3.41 5.4% Budweiser............60 2.36 5%
Budweiser Freedom Reserve Red Lager...65 3.4 5.4%
Bud Light.....40 1.86 4.2% (nearly undrinkable as beer, but not a bad water substitute)
Bud Light Lime.....70 2.16 4.2%
Bud Light Orange...33 2.75 4.2%
Bud Light Platinum....60 2.25 6%
Colorado Native IPL.....77 3.49 6.5%
Coors Light..........55 2.03 4.2%
Corona...65 2.34 4.6%
Dos Equis Green......55 2.74 4.3%
Estrella Jalisco (Star of Jalisco)....60 2.78 4.5%
Guiness Extra Stout....60 3.75 5.6% (Stout or Porter are not my favorite styles of beer, tastes like coffee lite mixed with beer, but, to my surprise on draft, was not all that bad)
Guinness Nitro IPA (from can)...49....2.96 5.8% (very light tasting, not very good, would drink if free)
Goose Island IPA.....50 3.71 5.9%(to me, tastes like drinking pine needle tea, barely palatable)
Heineken.............65 2.72 5%
Hopadillo IPA by Karbach Brewing, Houston Texas....77 3.75 6.6% (pretty bitter but appealing, very drinkable)
Live Oak Bib Bark Amber Lager..69 3.74 4.9%
Lone Star............45 2.5 4.65%
Lagunitas IPA........70 3.89 6.2%(pretty hoppy=bitter)
Michelob Ultra......60 1.89 4.2%
Modelo Especiale....55 2.82 4.4%( a respectable light Mexican Pilsner that is what Lone Star would hope to be)
Negra Modelo........75 3.34 5.4%
Pabst Blue Ribbbon (draft)....66 2.93 4.74% (I was really surprisedd by this beer on draft, had a really fine approach, and was seriously drinkable, can't say the same for same beer in cans)
Rahr Texas Red.....80 3.39 4.5%
Rebel Rouser Double IPA by Samuel Adams..79 3.8 8.4%
Red Stripe Jamaican Lager....69 2.97 4.7%
Revolver Bood and Honey...77 3.86 6.8%(hard to believe this is a wheat beer, which I usually don't like, but very good and being made in Texas helps, relatively hi alcohol content hits pretty hard)
Rogue Dead Guy Ale...80 3.94 6.8%(Really good but hi
alcohol content hits hard)
Sam Adams Bodton Lager......80 3.74 5.0%(my favorite of the
majors, if you consider Sam Adams a major)
Sam Adams Sam's 76....44.....Not rated by Beeeradvocate (really poor beer, pass if free)
Shiner Bock........70 3.18 4.4%
Singaha......79...3.04 5% (if you can find a Thai girl is becomes a 100)
Stella Artois....61 3.09 5% (i've hated this beer every time I've tried it (several) in the past, but maybe being on tap gave it new life, was not bad)
Yuengling Traditional Lager.....70 3.41 4.5%(one of my favorites, now available in La. from the oldest brewery in the US, 1829, slightly dark, good stuff)
Ziegenbock.....65 2.86 4%

Interesting list. I'm not much on beer.
I drink Warsteiner at lunchtime when I go out. My local only has bottled beer so I drink Becks or Stella (over Bud, Heiny, Corona, Miller). Micky Ultra isn't bad for what it is.

I'll also drink 1 or 2 Blue Moon.

Don't care for Hofbrau.

I tried Sam Adams, it's not for me.
Also tried the local micro brewery (Finbacks) but it's all IPA, that's not for me either.

Forgot one, Brooklyn Lager, was ok.

Well, to each his own, but I didn't intend this as some beer bible, it is my opinion, so you can take your "crediability (sic)" observation and carefully shove it up your ass.

The absolute best beer ever made is no longer made. Beck's Dark.

Kilimanjaro is next.

Ndovu, a close second.

Unfortunately, I've never found them imported into the US.

Shiner Bock is pretty good.

Guinness is great, but only draft.

In 1976 a bunch of us went down to Fredricksburg for the annual 'Walkfest'.This is when our German cousins come over for a long range hike(+ expect medals too). Long story short, the night before the walkfest they had rented some town hall + that was where the drinking was to be done.Well everyone was in a great mood;every round table was loaded with suds. Seems that the Germans preferred Lone Star as it tasted the closest to their own brew (remember, this was 1976). Anyway as you know in this country we take our turn buying a round for the table. Not the Germans;they bought a pitcher per person at the table. When my turn came up I went to the bar to order but the tenser says sorry we're out of lone star, all we have is coors.I told him in no uncertain terms that I had a table full of thirsty krauts + after a few words he gave me the pitchers for free. When the 1st German took his drink he had this strange look on his face + said "Dis Vaser".

Back to the original subject however; There are now so many indy breweries in the Austin area that the field is now open to immense speculation. If I had to say the best beer I ever tasted I would have to say it was a Busch. Now before you get indignent, here are the particlulres. It was 1969 in Florida at the bud /busch plant middle of summer(hot,humid,miserable.etc.).They had a display room in the A.C. with fresh (free) ice cold Busch on tap in frosted goblets.Never had another that tasted so good, but God,that was an experience.

I like stout and porter during cold months; hefes, sours and lagers during warm months; and a few IPAs here and there. I'm not a sipper so I avoid the high ABV stuff.

I've come full circle, meaning I used to chase the highest rated IPAs but I lost interest. Pretty much ANY of the major adjunct lagers taste fine ice cold......except Lone Star. rotflmo

I believe in brand loyalty. I drink Bud Light Lime for the most part. When I'm not in the mood for that lime taste, I prefer Coors, followed by Coors Light.

If I want to get off track I like a Blue Moon Cinnamon Horchata Ale. https://www.bluemoonbrewingcom...-beers/horchata-beer

If I have to go craft beer, I just go with an IPA.

Beck's Dark was a good smooth beer. From memory, I wouldn't put it even close to "best ever made", but it was good.

I've never had an African beer, here, or in Africa, and I've tried almost all of them, that was really good. I think most people are adding the experience to their enjoyment of beer. Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't make them actually taste better. But, they sure beat the hell out of the water.

Newcastle Brown Ale!

Only beer I ever drank that on a hung-over morning, with your head in the toilet, dry retching, you would still think "Damn that beer tastes good!".

Purely in the interests of science, I and my beloved wife (designated driver) made another beer N wings run to Texarkana Buffalo Wild Wings last evening and I sampled 4 more pints of their drafts, which are posted above. Revolver Blood and Honey, was, to me, by far the best, and, Goose Island IPA, which I've had before, maintained it's "nearly undrinkable" taste to me.

While visiting the local friendly Walmart, I bought some Estralla Jalisco and Heineken to try. I first got interested in E. Jalisco when it had a large sign behind the batters in the MLB playoffs. It makes more sense when you know that E. Jalisco is owned by Inbev, the worldwide brewer that owns Budweiser among many others and is being introduced into the US market.

I found it to be better than the average Mexican lager, but not great.

Heineken is one of the top 10 selling beers in the world and tastes like it. Again, good but not great. Better than E. Jalisco to my tastes.
