I figured I'd start a new thread.

I'm booked.

I'm piggybacking on this.

On the Antique Roadshow this week a man was showing a late 1800s painting of his grandfather in cavalry gear. The painter was Frederic Remington. The grandfather and Remington were good friends. Along with the painting, the man had a hand-written letter (and stamped envelop) from Remington to his grandfather mentioning the painting along with general personal comments.

When asked whether he had ever had the items appraised, the man said in the 1960s he was told the items were worth around $6,000. The professional said the items, together, would easily bring $600,000 today......and don't ever pull it out of a paper bag again, like he had just witnessed.

I find all antiques fascinating, but if I know the story or ownership behind the item, that really adds to my interest. I own two antique long guns, probably worth about $200, combined.

I worry that the stories behind the old family items I own will be lost by the next generation. No one seems to care for antiques much.
