Fill it full (almost) OF water and then add 1/4 cup of bleach to it. Let it sit overnight and then rinse it out several times. Works great.

Bleach works great, just keep it away from kids. Many moons ago when I ran my service truck I kept an igloo water cooler on board but on Sundays rinsed + bleached it out. Caught one of the kids taking a drink.Snatched him bald headed + he spit it out. Scared me to death.

That is way to much bleach only a couple of drops are needed to kill any thing in that small amount of water. AS you can see 2oz of bleach is not needed.

Here are the rations for bleach to water.

The formula for Purifying Drinking Water is listed below.
Water – Bleach Ratio
(5-6% Sodium Hypochlorite)
Numbers are ’rounded’
1 Quart water, 2 drops bleach
1 Gallon water, 8 drops bleach
5 Gallons water, 1/2 teaspoon bleach
10 Gallons water, 1 teaspoon bleach
50 Gallons water, 5 teaspoons bleach
Water – Bleach Ratio for Purifying Drinking Water
(8.25% Sodium Hypochlorite)
Numbers are ’rounded’
1 Quart water, 1 drop bleach
1 Gallon water, 5 drops bleach
5 Gallons water, 3/8 teaspoon bleach (or three 1/8th teaspoons)
10 Gallons water, 3/4 teaspoon bleach
50 Gallons water, 3.5 teaspoons bleach

Bleach ? Chlorine bleach ? Hydrogen peroxide ?
Food grade hydrogen peroxide ? Many are allergic to chlorine bleach. The only bleach I have is 3 % food grade hydrogen peroxide .
