I searched this keyword first, and only came up with a possible company in OR doing this. My mule deer was rubbing his velvet off, and the taxidermist told me that peeling it off was not feasible. It would not result in a natural look to the antlers, something about porosity and inability to stain them properly. Next, we decided on keeping the velvet, but now the problem seems to be repairing the rubbed areas correctly. He suggested we have them re- done entirely in artificial velvet, at a cost of $400. What do you guys think? Thanks for your input. Merkel 140A- .470NE Beretta Vittoria- 12 Ga. J.P. Sauer & Sohn Type B- 9.3x64mm ArmaLite AR-10A4- 7.62x51mm Franchi Highlander- 12 Ga. It's your call and your choices are slim. Years ago we used nylon "flocking" which was tiny nylon fibers that came in many colors. I found it best to mix two shades of brown to attain the desired effect, but only to patch very small areas. Large areas won't look good upon close inspection. Cheaper by far, but I do believe there may be a few studio's offering to apply artificial velvet to antlers. I'd want to examine a sample first before spending $400 plus shipping. We have had several racks done in this method and were never 100% happy with the end result. The racks we had put the artificial velvet on were either old and cracked, chalky,or rodent chewed,so artificial velvet was our only option to mount them over a nice cape(for display), as they were unstainable in their found condition. They look ok from "far" away but definitly look artificial close up. The color blending for a natural appearance is very difficult. Sometimes you have to go with the only option available to the situation. I have seen very nice work done on half shed velvet mounts. We have done several in our shop. It is a timely, tedious procedure which may cost you close to the cost of artificial velvet. I looked up the website for the company in Oregon who is doing the artificial velvet and they do not have any pictures of the end results. Sure wish I had a bit more computor savvy as we do have pics of a few we had done. My oldest is off at her first year of college hence my computor whiz is gone and I am rendered helpless ...lol! 3584ELK one of us If as you state the Muley was already shedding his velvet then the antler should be developed and consequently pealing and staining should not be a major issue. To preserve the velvet that was on the horns or a rack in full velvet freeze-drying works very well. Unfortunately repairing major areas of velvet is simply not much of an option since matching the real thing with artificial does not produce a good match. Stripping and staining should not be time consuming or expensive. Mike O

I've used that place in Oregon (Research Mannikans I presume) to put fake velvet on some antlers. It looks a bit fake and the color match wasnt good to what I provided. Texture looks real, if they'd match the color better I think you'd be happy.
