I am planning a trip to Kamchatka and trying to get the shipping for the hide worked out before I go. At the moment they are trying to charge me nearly $2,200 to go from Petropavlovsk - Moscow to Milan which is absurd! Assuming that it weighs around 150lb I'm pretty sure I can take it as excess baggage for less. Does anyone have a figre on what a green salted brown bear hide plus the skull might weigh? Thanks.

Express, Not sure of weight but a few years ago we brought 3 from Nome to Anchorage on the plane. They were heavy but no way 150 lbs each. My guess would be 75 - 100 lbs. We just checked them in as extra bagage. BigB

problem for me is that I can't bring it back as excess baggage. I just found out that I would need a CITES import permit which takes 30-60 days to get and I need to have the Russian CITES so it has to be done after the hunt. Might be cheaper to go back and get it!!

An average Bear say 9' will weigh around 70 lbs. If 10' or over, you can figure 100 lbs to as much as 125 lbs. This will depend upon how clean the skull is; how well the skin is fleshed and how much salt remains on the hide. Your getting gouged pretty hard but again, they hold the cards. Ask your G&F department if you can pay a fee for rush service on your CITES permit. It all depends on the size of the bear and if it is wet from the weather or dry.. best count of 130 lb for the a salted hide and meatless skull. I shot one a while back and it was a 9'9'' brownie and it was soaking wet from the river and the rain and it weight 167 at the airport with little salt left on it. A little pricey to ship back. You will also need a USDA tannery or taxidermist to ship it to when you clear customs too...Have a fun trip... www.african-montana-taxidermy.com life member of SCI life member of NRA NTA Master Scorer SCI Scorer for Rowland Ward www.african-montana-taxidermy.com

Tell them to find you another broker and cut the $$$ amount in half. The economy ain't that good in Russia. Ride the Orient Express back and take it with you. That would make two adventures, eh and there are lots of very attractive distractions on the train to help you while away the hours. Don't ask how I know... Rich
