I can't compete with a few of the guys here at all but I thought i would post my latest deer I did. I finished this last night. It is my 4th deer and first all on my own without any help. It has a few rough spots and I need to comb it out and get some paint on it in a week or 2 when she dries but it was fun doing it and I think it wasn't too bad for the few I have done. Any comments good or bad welcomed. Especially from the guys that have some advice on how to do better next time.

Nice work,

My garage looks worse than yours.

For your 4th deer, nice job. I would suggest using a hair dryer and brush to assist you with hair finishing. Best to get the ear hair natural before the skin dries and those huge northern bucks have thick body hair. Using a dryer and brush before the skin sets can allow you to stand the hair up by back combing which is natural during cold weather. Also, his ears are forward and alert, but his eyes relaxed. When their ears are forward, they have a fixed and intent stare with the nose a little higher. Placing the ears backward a little gives a more calm look and makes the antler spread appear even larger. I think by the time you get a few more under your belt you'll be on target. Always, and I mean always use reference photo's of live deer, and lots of them. You can never have too many. tu2

Thanks David. He looks wet and nasty right now. he is covered in hair gel to dry and I will comb him out next week and make sure he looks good. I need some paint on him and clean up the eyes. I also didn't think about the ear coment but you are right. I might trya nd move them a bit if I can. They are still wet I think. I'll take some better pictures when he is all done and see if that helps as well.
I did a few others with a taxidermist friend by my side. This one was all on my own. I still have lots to learn.

You are definitely on the right track, and did a very nice job for your first "alone" work. In reality, we know those old bucks can look like rats slept in their fur, but what's real in nature doesn't get it with the demanding public. That's a great buck by the way, and Alberta has no shortage. I look forward to seeing the finished mount. Cheers, David

Finally got the touch ups and a few changes before it dried and then the paint. It turned out quite well for one of my firsts on my own I thought.
