Hello, I am looking for advice. I have a few mounts I want to sell. I am not particularly interested in trying to sell them on e-bay, gunbroker or here (unless the buyers want to come pick them up in Northern Maine) I read online that Cabelas buys mounts. Has anyone done this? I have a full mount hyena, shoulder mount warthog and a shoulder mount waterbuck. All from Tanzania. If you're from Maine, maybe you can pick up a copy of the Hawkeye newspaper somewhere. There's an auction down in Steep Falls twice a year in the spring and fall where you can sell off your unwanted taxidermy. You won't recoup what you paid for the mount, but it could suit your needs. | |||

Also, you had mentioned Cabela's. I have a number of friends who are taxidermists. They all say that Cabela's is a difficult company to deal with due to their lowball policies on paying for taxidermists work. You would in all likelihood run into the same issue with them, though the pieces you are looking to sell sound interesting enough for a place like that. | |||

Lolli Brothers Auction in Missouri sells lots of taxidermy mounts. The person who runs it is an honest individual. Here is the problem, by the time you pay shipping or whether you use their trucks who traverse the country picking up items for their auctions. You still have to pay shipping. Add consignment fees and low whole sale prices and you end up giving them away. Cabela's usually want African mounts and only exceptional North American mounts, and you are still giving them away. Sometimes you can donate them to museums and get the tax write off. The bottom line is, rarely will you get any where near what you have in them. They are worth much more to you, keep them and enjoy them. If someone on occasion desires to buy a mount, sell it. If a family member or close friend wants one, give it to them. We all have to face, that one day we will not be able to hunt, due to physical/age limitations. You can always go in your den and observe the history album of YOUR hunts, through those mounts. You may want to search for any movie studio's or film company's in your area. They sometimes require mounts when filming movies or mini-series. When I was in the taxidermy profession, we on occasion had company's rent our show room mounts (Hank Williams Jr story, etc.) Require full replacement insurance. Any damage could cover what you'd want for if selling the mount. Never hurts to contact them.
