My sad tale is that I took a huge buff, nice sable in Mozambique and do not expect to get the trophies. (Long, miserable story about a corrupt concession holder.) Does any taxidermist do replicas of these animals?

Some supply companies sell reproduction headgear for a variety of animals. Finding a replacement hide is often a bit expensive after shipping/tanning, but they're available to any reputable taxidermist. Same goes with the horns/antlers. If replacements don't meet your needs, they can certainly be hand reproduced but expect to pay for that kind of detail.

You may want to contact R.J. Simington in Klamath Falls, OR and who specializes in African game. (541)883-2492 He's won numerous awards in major shows and is a member of the Board of Directors for the National Taxidermists Association.

Your best alternative is to locate surplus skins and horns, which may be quite an undertaking, due to them being such prized trophies and the sable such an 'expensive' trophy. It may be an expensive undertaking, but it can be done if the skins are available. I don't believe I have ever seen reproduction horns for either of them in the taxidermy catalogs, but I would think there are private taxidermists who have cast and made a mold to pour a pair up. I am sure some of the taxidermists on here will be able to help out. We presently only have molds for North American horned animals in our shop.

Sorry for the loss of your trophies and hope all turns out well for you.

Kind regards,
Mary

OK Brice, I just talked to Walter Slippers of Ingogo Outfitters in SA. He says that it will be a bit pricey but such trophies can be obtained from "extras" they have on hand. You can contact him direct at ingogo@megaweb.co.za

Brice,
Look into purchasing an animal which is already mounted (if legal- which should make no difference between a cape, horns, or the mount). This can be much cheaper than obtaining a cape, horns, shipping, the paying a taxidermist to mount it. Just a thought. In either case, buying parts to mount or buying a mount, you will be getting a representative of the animal.

Just my opinion...on purchasing an already mounted trophy.

I think you would have a much harder time finding a 'newly' mounted trophy of the specimens you are looking for. Not many mount such trophies and don't pick them up from a taxidermist. Not many taxidermists have time to mount up their surplus for resale. So what you are left to search for is older mounts from someone's collection. With older mounts come possible problems: poor quality tan, dermestids, poor quality forms, possible repaired damage. I have seen many older mounts donated to organizations for fundraising and they just aren't worth the investment. I also have seen resale mounts which usualy aren't the best of quality.

I think you are on the right track to start with a fresh skin and have it mounted. If you are going to go to the expense of replacing such valuable trophies, start with new products, you will be much more pleased in the long run. In this Industry..you get what you pay for! Once any trophy is mounted, the aging process begins so, IMHO newer is a much better investment.

Kind Regards,
Mary

Brice, is the corrupt concession holder out of business? If not, have you reported him to the Moz Professional Hunters Assoc.? You definitely want to post the details here on AR and I'll be glad to forward this to my contacts. My Moz Outfitter would be interested in knowing who this operator is. None of us like this kind of thing. I'll be glad to help if I can.

A sable mount, in good condition can be had for $2,000-3,000 and a good buff can be found for $2,000-3,000. I think it is the same as other purchases in life, inspect it and if it works, buy it. There are many mounts out there for sale by Estates, exwives, and downsizing elderly men.

I do agree with Mary, that there can be something wrong with existing mounts. But, I would have no problems in purchasing a rug done 5 years ago by Mary or a mount done by Mr Roof 10 years ago. If that is what I wanted and the mounts appeared to be in good condition then by all means, go for it.

Buying a completed mount is just another avenue to think about. If you go that route then you will have to find a mount in the size, pose, and condition which makes you happy.

On another note, I know of a Sable cape for sale which, I think, is being offered for $1,800.
