Over the last month or so I have observed a problem with the black bear rug I have hanging on a wall in my home. I took this bear in coastal BC about 15 years ago, it is close to seven foot and was made into a rug there and shipped to me.

Here is the problem. It is disintegrating. The hide is rock hard and pieces are falling off, literally. What could be the cause? I am sure I will have to discard it eventually.

The problem is with the tan. When it was tanned , it probably wasn’t neutralized correctly. Your hide has acid rot. Nothing you can do.

I agree, acid tan not properly neutralized. As for "bugs" on mounts, check out Mount Medix. Unlike other bug proofers, it won't run you out of the house for a week. Has a mint like smell. Applied properly, bug stay away. They are online.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
