Buying old mounts

Does anyone buy any mounts for themselves (on this page) of game they didn't shoot?

This past year or so I have been picking up sheds and more recently...some old mounts. The sheds were some elk and a moose...nice decorations in the office at work.

But the most recent mount was a Mule Deer buck shot in 1957 in Colorado. I'm guessing it is 180"-190" b&c.

It has a few issues with the hide, but still presentable. I think it looks great with the old school look of an old mount.

Speaking with colleagues, some say they would never purchase a shoulder mount of someone else's animal. I understand it is a personal thing compared to just a shed antler.

I plan to get the buck scored. And maybe eventually have it re mounted with a new cape to make it look even better.

Shit, lost my message!!

That's a mi9ghty fine rack you have. Do it!

Take a look at: www.circlemauctions.com

I never bought one. First season after WWII, Dad and 4 brother in laws & one's brother went to the White River Forest in NW CO. That was the first season after the war and thy had all just been discharged.

One of my uncles killed a big buck. with a single shot .30/40.

Had it mounted short straight neck. Aunt wouldn't let him hang it in the house. He hung it next to a window in the garage all those years. He died in 72, she died in 89. Grandson inherited the place. I put the word out if they didn't want the buck don't trash it I did.

The hair and ear had rotted off, eye turned white and looked nasty.

I had it remounted: Left sneak with a fresh cape. Scored 187.4 pts. Lower L pt is short and don't match. What gives this points is the extra heavy bone. It cost $650 I think in '01 or so. It's a beautiful mount, I don't regret it a bit.\

Best wishes,
George

Totally personal thing...

I like my own but admire others. I have a friend that wants me to have his Stone sheep when he passes. I would take it.

On antlers, buy what you like. Don't worry about what others think.

A caveat - be careful of anything that could trigger a Lacey Act issue or a buy/sell of wild animal parts.

If I could save a mount I cared about, and hang it in my home, I would do so without apology.

I would give proper credit to the hunter, and would save it.

Having said that, I don't shop for such mounts, and have never seen one by chance.

Best advice anyone could give you. USF&W loves to make cases out of the innocent. Educate yourself when buying/selling native or exotic wildlife. If in doubt, best to contact your State or Federal agency. If they can't send you straight forward text of the laws in question, keep records of phone calls. Each State has it's own laws but Federal law supersedes in most cases. LDK

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......
