Is there a recommended treatment to preserve Ivory from Wart Hog, Hippo and Ele? If so, what is the product and how often? Some of my African stuff is getting older and I've never treated any of it.

One thing to consider on a serious side; ivory should not be kept in a very dry environment. Humidity under controlled conditions will help prevent cracking.

Still waiting for an answer. Anything new on ivory preservation from taxidermists or others?

BTW, I use cream hair conditioner on my Ele hair bracelets. Nothing special, usually the hotel/motel freebies.

I have used Lubriderm lotion on mine and the elephant tusks have done well. Hippo tusks have not done as well but have not split.

Humid in Chicago and they have been in a basement trophy room.

I don't think that Elephants use anything on their tusks so you probably don't need to either..

I was recently at the Benectine distillery and they have a collection of very old ivory. It's in an enclosed case and I think the humidity must be controlled, it looks to be in good shape for the most part. It's been in existance for a long time before the humidity controlled case though and I think it must have been in a moist enough environment, possibly in the UK for a long time?

I fill clients tusks with a product called Smooth Cast. Its a casting resin and seems to prevent cracking. Ive got a set of WH tusks that are over 10 years old as well as a set of bush pig tusks with no cracks.

I have a different type of Euro mount for my wartie. Should I be concerned that I can't get to the bases of the tusks to treat them?

I'm pretty sure that they were not treated at all when I had them done in Namibia.

I don't know if this will be of any help but this is what i have done and eveything is good although i don't have any elephant tusks. On all tusks i have either pig, hippo, walrus. i fill in the tusk with silicon first and then once a year polish them using car polish which is silicon based. so far none have cracked or discoloured. hope this helps?

My taxidermist says to use ordinary furniture polish about once a year. I also use it on impala horns, etc.
