Dear All Taxidermist,
Does anyone have any experience with the finished rhino replicas that one can order from mckenzie? Anyone seen one in person? hows the work?

What should a rhino replica cost? if done by a taxidermist and not just a pre-finished on from mckenzie..obviously, there will be a range, what should one expect?

We have done a couple from Mckenzie, although not the finished repro's. We have done the unfinished Rhino and reproduced the clients horn size and shapes. something in the factory paint job just looked wrong to me and the thing i notice about the factory finish is that the skin color and fold highlight seem to be backwards from what it should be. the factory has it light skin dark fold and it should be dark skin light fold.
We charge 4500.00 for the work we put out on the repro which includes the custom horn recreation.
Hope this helps....Anthony

That looks good. I would agree that the finishing can make or break it in terms of realism.

My first try at a repro rhino was this Roland Ward black rhino that I put together many years ago using a Jonas paper form and sculpting on layers of skin texture. There is probably not a black rhino alive today with horns this size but if you look back in the old books you will find photos of black rhinos with horns longer than this.

The unfinished rhinos from Mckenzie make things easy and they look good to me as long as the finish work is done well. One thing you do not want is a "clean" looking rhino. they neeed to have that dusty look with no shine.

My last Rhino "dart" client (darting or green hunts are now closed) chose the McK form and it turned out really nice. As mentioned, the finish work determines the quality. In itself, the form is fine, but taking it to the next level (finish work) is what makes or breaks the mount. I wouldn't use any studio without seeing their work. Rhino have a velvet type hair around their horn bases; eye lashes, and hair in various places. This won't be overlooked by a pro.

Sorry for what might be a stupid question, but is there any trouble mounting rhinos traditionally? I mean with the real skin..

As I understand there is. I've just never learnt why. Smiler

Well if you've darted a rhino, then it makes it kinda hard, bc the rhino is still using it! Cool

Also, shipping and tanning is expensive, so way cheaper to just take the horn and replica, or if you dart, just get a cast made.

FYI: Rhino darting and all other DG has been halted in RSA. It's now shoot with a rifle or camera. Anders; skin mounts on Rhino are not much different than mounting a Cape Buffalo. Finish work is the key to producing a quality mount.
Cheers,
David

This year at SCI a taxidermy company out of SA had both a lifesize mount and a head only. I want to say High Veld (sp?) Anybody else see them?

Really?? Big Grin

A friend of mine shot a rhino in RSA a couple of months ago. He talked about making a cast of the horn, because they were difficult to preserve..???

Thanks, David!

Anders: maybe he's referring to the skin? They have very thick skin, similar to Elephant. Several inches thick in places. This must be scored (cross hatch cuts with a sharp skinning knife) and/or thinned down or the salt won't penetrate well. It is normal to have the top layer slip on both animals, so the Taxidermist must dye/paint back to natural color.
Good hunting,
David
