Temperature effects on taxidermy

I will be undergoing an extensive remodel at the house this fall, and will have to move several mounts out to an unheated garage for storage. In December the temps in the garage can drop to the 20's and occasionally the teens. Humidity will be very low, as I am at 8000ft in the Rockies. What effect will this have on my mounts?

As long as the temps do not drop rapidly, you may not have any problems. However, the taxidermy methods and materials if inferior may lead to cracking, drumming or incision separation. I would keep a close eye on your mounts and inspect around the eyes, nose, lips and incision. Also check for the skin pulling away from the ear liners or interior brisket area (drumming). Extreme heat or cold can be a culprit. LDK

David articulated the possible problems that could arise quite thoroughly. Temerature changes, especially humidity, play the most damaging havoc on mounts in a non-climate controlled room.

Have you considered putting them on display in a local sporting good store? Sportsman's Warehouse will gladly display them for long or short term. They are very thorough with the paper work involved with each mount so there is peace of mind that no-one will come to claim your mount. It cannot be removed without the paperwork copy you will have in your possession.
This is an ideal solution for keeping your trophies in a climate controlled environment and giving you peace of mind as you will have enough on your plate with the remodel.

If Sportman's Warehouse is a possibility and you encounter any problems PM me as we have a great relationship with the company and may be of some assistance.

Kindest Regards,
Mary

Thanks to both of you for great advice. I can mitigate the change in temp by relocating the mounts now while the weather is still mild, but Mary's idea is a great one. We have several stores here in Durango that I'll be talking to soon about hanging mounts on their walls. I think they'll go for it.

TWL, use caution as some stores tell you to leave and "don't worry about it." Take photo's, get it in writing and signed only by an upper level manager. Include the cost of the animal, and all associated taxidermy cost, just for insurance sake. You don't want an Nyala that you paid $2,500 trophy fee, $700 taxidermy, $75 dip/pack and an average of $100 to ship home raw from Africa to be valued at $200. I've had stores close up and be gone before I ever knew about it. Great idea, just deal with major players. SW would be one.
Good hunting,
David

Can't stress how much I agree with you David. We have heard the horror stories from customers who put mounts in little mom and pop type sporting good stores and have lost them either to someone else just taking them out of the store claiming they were theirs or the store closing and clearing out in the middle of the night.

That is why I specified the Sportsman's Warehouse. They have detailed, accurate duplicate paperwork with the description, value and ownership of each mount and 100% insurance coverage of each mount also.

Cabela's and Bass Pro have their own company taxidermists who mount their specimens for display and buy many collections outright. They do not display local taxidermist or sportsmans trophies.

Kindest regards,
Mary

Good info Mary. Everyone considering this for short/long term storage should consider Sportsmans Warehouse as an option. Too bad we don't have one here in Nashville. Only a Bass Pro and Cabela's is coming!!!
