My taxidermist wants to know if I want him to use the actual tusks on my warthog or if I want him to use artifical tusks. Is on better than the other for any reason. I would appreciate any words of wisdom.

I like to display the real tusks in the skull on a table top. That would be one reason to use casts of your tusks on a shoulder mount. ~Ann

On one of the knife forums a photo was posted for ID. It was a knife and fork carving set.He didn't realize the handles were warthog tusks.Looked interesting but I didn't think they were a practical shape.

If you saved the skull, you could do as Ann suggested, otherwise I would use the real tusks in the mount. The fake ones look ok but nothing beats the real thing. Ivory, warthog or elephant has a certain luster to it that is magic. Whatever it is, it has a quality to it that is difficult to describe and has been attractive to people for thousands of years. Anyway, it is difficult to fake. If you use the real ones make sure your taxidermist fills the hollow tusks to prevent cracking.

Grafton, Thanks for the advice on filling the cracks

Dr.C, Grafton refers to the hollow core of each tusk, not cracks per se. If you do not fill the cavities, they will eventually dry out and start cracking. Some Taxidermists use a small amount of Vaseline capped over with silicone. Resin works if used properly. As Grafton mentions, the real tusks look better as a rule. If your family and friends are not bothered by Europian mounts, or skulls in general, then they make attractive additions to your trophy rooms. Always a topic of conversation.
