I have a Black Bear hunt booked for October of this year. The guide's reputation is one of good sized bears. I'd like to have a simple stand-up mount done for my den. With the mouth opened just enough to show some teeth. A pose like it's curious and looking around. Any suggestions as far as a good taxidermist who does especially well on bears?

You need to look at almost any post on her by any of the Taxidermist that post on here.
They all do super work.

Black bear is a common mount. Honestly, have you tried looking on the Internet?

There almost as many black bear forms as whitetails and that is a lot. They are everywhere.

SG Olds,
It's been my experience that there is usually one taxidermist who excels at doing one particular animal. They may be a good all-a-round taxidermist , but really rise to the occasion with one particular species. But thank you for the internet advise.
blaser93,
Good suggestion. I'll pursue that.

I applaud you for looking for personal recommendations on a taxidermist. Unfortunately, there are some bads ones out there that can look pretty good on the internet.

Like some of the gang said, there are a lot of good black bear forms. You may want to order a catalog form McKenzie: http://www.mckenziesp.com/

I am sure you can find a good taxidermist in Santa Fe or Albuquerque by asking around with local hunters.

FYI-Bob Wilkins at Wildlife Artistry in Cameron, Texas does a lot of bears and rugs. He has over 40 years experience.

Good Hunting,

Bob

I personnally use the wildlife gallery for everything.
First class customer service, first class taxidermy, and first class turn around time.
Good Luck,

Bob in TX,
I have the latest McKenzie catalog. They have a form close to my wants. It will require only a slight modification to the mouth (slightly open instead of closed). Thanks, I've always found your recommendations helpful. I'll look into the Wildlife Artistry also. I'm not really sure about SF or Albq.

The Artistry of Wildlife

Jerry Huffaker-TX is another top taxidermist but I don't have any of his or Grafton Cromwell's (Safari Arts) Black Bear pics. Here in Nashville, Wildlife Taxidermy-Foster Butt does a lot of Bears. Jerry would be closer, he's in TX.

There will be good taxidermist in New Mexico, visit their shops, then hit up the forums and see who screwed who?

That way your not paying shipping freight and boxing fees for someone across the nation.

Don't know where you're hunting but if in Canada, Steve Von Hagen, Tundra Taxidermy does all of mine. Steve is in Sakatchewan but travels to other provinces to pick up hides. He has mounted my bears from Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC. I leave them with the outfitter and Steve picks them up. He also personally delivers the mount. A long drive fron Saskatchewan to Houston, Texas but he has several clients in Texas. He delivers in the summer.

Here is one of the mounts he did for me. I chose the closed mouth as I felt it more natural in a pose where the bear is standing to get a better look.

Thanks RReese,
Nice mount, looks like a good bear. Thr guide I've booked has really taken some nice bears the last two year. I'm optimistic about my hunt. I've got a perfect place for a stand-up bear mount to compliment my other trophies.

Cessna, are you hunting in New Mexico?

If you are, I'll be interested in hearing about your hunt. Hunting w/ dogs, spot & stalk or bait? I've got a 17 year old I'd like to introduce to bear hunting. NM is lot closer than Canada.
