Since this rifle is not for big game use I would get him a 223 rifle that fits. 223 ammo is very inexpensive comparied to even the 245. You should get him a couple of thousand rounds from ..say Black Hills and let him shoot and plink away. when He is ready for deer get him a 243 to a 7mm-08. The more he shoots [with proper technique] the better he will be when he is ready for big game.
