For anyone who thinks that bait is the only way to get a bear in New Brunswick. Tonight was my 3rd night searching in carleton county. I watched a large sow with 3 cubs and saw 5 other bears over the three nights. I put on three stalks in three nights. The first was 30mins into the first night and decided to pass but closed to within 20 yards for fun. The second stalk was on a decent bear that made it's way to heavy cover before I could close the distance. Tonight I was getting short on time as my schedule for the next three weeks has not much time for hunting so I figured I would take what the good lord seemed fit for me. Well I passed on the first one then found this guy who I had to cross 200 yards of very sparse cover (wheat stubble and early clover) on my knees and then my stomach. I pushed my rifle and spotting scope ahead of me and as the bear apeared to be moving to cover I used my cased spotting scope as a rest and from prone took him at 200 yards with a 225gr Hornady going 2620fps from my .340 Jaden.

Yes I know it aint big, I've shot bigger for sure, but it was a wonderfull hunt and I love getting dirty to get what I want.

By the way just to top off my night I saw one more in a clover patch on the way home.

Nice job. We're leaving this Saturday for AB. My other group of friends are hunting this week.

Hopefully we'll score.

Congratulations on your bear!

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

Congratulations! Well done.

In Montana we're limited to spot and stalk and calling, mouth calls only on top of that. This year I took a small bear at 20 feet with a 44 handgun after spotting it, stalking in and calling. The area was mixture of open clearcuts, selective cuts and old burn. Great fun as a clear shot from any distance would be difficult due to the dead trees and such.

I've hunted bears with dogs, my own, when I lived in Oregon and taken two while calling from stands over bait but nothing compares to being on the ground with your target. Personally I'll never hunt bear again except via spot and stalk and probably only with a handgun. I'm always impressed when someone gets a bear via spot and stalk on their own terms. It takes a lot of work but the thrill is worth it. Again congratulations on a great hunt.

killed my wyo. bear this year with a predator call.even after he had winded me and went over the top of the ridge,15 min later the wind changed and i figuered i had nothing to lose and gave the predator call a try,he came back twice to calling.the first time he came back i didn't have a clear shot, after 5 min he lost interest and went over the ridge again the 2nd time he came back he lined up in a clear spot and i dumped him.thrilling and will use this method in n.mex later in the fall.
