silwaneA few Aoudad sheep from Marathon TX
Some friends and I hunting in the mountains around Marathon a few weeks ago and took a few nice Aoudad. The largest was just under 31". Tough huning no roads in the mountains so all on foot with backpacks. This hunt was as reminded me a lot of Ibex in Mongolia.
I was using a 300 Jarrett built on a Stiller Predator action with a Kreiger Barrel. The larger of the two was cleanly taken a 467 yds, while the smaller was 317 yds.

Yes, they're pretty good eating. One wouldn't think so while skinning a male due to the randy odor but the meat is great.
Nice ones!

I'm thinking anyone that thinks a ram like those tastes great, probably hasn't eaten one. The meat is tied together with 20# test line or equivalent. If you get your rocks off chewing, you might like them, because you will chew a lot, and swallow damn seldom. I spit nearly all of mine out, and I thought I gave it a damn good effort. My wife and kids went straight to the trash with theirs.
silwane,
Kudos on the beautiful Rams...

Great hunt for sure.
My hat is off to you!
Thanks for posting the pix.

Sorry yours wasn't edible. But I speak from first hand experience when I say mine was very good. Maybe it was a difference in diet. Ours don't have access to monofilament

GeedubyaTiggertate,
The summer sausage I brought to the "big bore shoot" was audad and pork. I find that audad makes great sausage.

Tiggertate, I would rather nail the meat to a wall and eat the horns.

Ryan CampbellGood Rams. Audad hunting in West TX can be a tough hunt. Some of those ranches out there have no roads and what fences do exist were built around WWII or before.
It's probably the toughest hunt you can do in TX.
The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends.
I didn't learn this by reading about it or seeing it on TV. I learned it by doing it.

Bob in TXHey Jason,
Congrats on a great hunt and some good shooting! Those are terrific Aoudads!!
Bob
nice work!!
got a chance to hunt them out of marfa
with a guy i met in a remote cow camp in
the hills of wyoming,i rode in and had
coffee in my pannards.... he was out
so we brewed a pot and 5 months later he drives up in my yard in a brand new chev dually deisel and says "lets go to texas"!!!!
family had 29 sections,we stayed for a week.
thing i love about the fine state of texas,
you gotta have 29 sections to grow 100 beef
so you know this country is remote.
yet in a week i know of 17 dance halls
and 6 barbaque places, that didn't seem all that far away.
and managed to bring home a 31,29 and 2@ 27"
last 2 days we preg-tested 600 head
of "man eatin brangus",his daddy had.
had to come home and rest
great trip,cool country,and wonderful people!!

L. David KeithGood looking ram Jason, congrats. Had the pleasure of hunting them myself and I highly enjoy it. Did you try the meat? Regardless of what I'd heard for years, it turns out great. No gamey flavor and good on the grill.
Good hunting,
David
