My son wants to plan a back pack bull elk hunt in Montana next year. Of course I know one of us needs to draw a permit first. We don’t want to get more than 3-4 miles off the trail. What area of the state do you recommend if we are drawn? Thank you My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

You should get some pack horses lined up in case you are successful. Four miles off the trail is a long way, especially if it is down from the trail (trails in Montana/ID tend to follow higher ground).

Deer and elk, just elk? The elk only permit is an easier draw than the deer/elk combo. What season: archery or general firearms? Do you care about grizzlies in the area? Lining up horses for packing is a good suggestion. I can give you some suggestions based on answers to the above. Jeremy

Appreciate the feedback. I told my son since we needed to get some pack horses we were better off booking an outfitter or guide so we are now looking into this. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.
