Would anyone reccomend an elk bugle?
I've never felt the need to try a bugle as elk season runs fairly late in Washington. At any rate, I'm looking to buy one. What make sounds best?
Thanks, Stu

My favorites are the Primos Terminator for a bugle and their Hoochi Mamma for a cow call. Both are widely available. If you can't find 'em locally, Cabellas has them.

If you're not hunting the rut, don't waste your time with a bugle. The only thing you'll end up doing is letting the elk know where you are, and also educating them even further. I think way to many people bugle more than they should, you're much better off to use it for locating elk verses calling them in.

Buy a couple cow calls and use them sparingly if you must. I doubt you'll have much luck calling anything in but cows after the rut though. If cows are talking... they're likely lost and looking to join back up with the herd.

I like the Primos calls as well. My favorite is one made by Woods Wise (I think), called a Hyperhot Cow call. I mostly just use a reed/mouth call.

You've said everything that needed to be said Ivan, good post. The Primos calls are the ones to use (SPARINGLY).

Ivan hit it on the head. However, you want to learn to bugle get a good reed/mouth call. Quaker Boy is my favorite followed by primos. They are much more versitile than bugles like the terminator and the hoochie-mamma. I carry a hoochie-mamma, but hardly use it. I prefer the hyper-hot that Ivan mentioned or the primos Hyper-lip. The down side is that all three calls are pretty hard to use at full draw! That's when a cow chirp from a reed in the mouth pays big dividends. +IMO bugles like the terminator sound like chit!

another vote for the Primos calls. I think some hunters are under the impression that the inventor or company must be in "elk country" to make a quality call. SOOO not true.

Will and his company know what they are doing and imo, make top tier calls, especially elk.

As mentioned, a lot of hunters call too much. If I was hunting after the rut or on the downside of it, I'd only use the Hoochie Mama call. No bugling.

Power Bugle by E.L.K. gets my vote. You can mimic every call a bull makes even a glunk. But as mentioned, unless they are in the rut, I'd use a cow call to locate, then silently slip in front of the herd and cross your fingers.
