1) .22 LR - this enables me to shoot 3 handguns and 3 rifles, one of which is an old German falling block free-rifle (a Haenel).

2) 6 mm Rem - my only custom rifle, built on Mod 98 w/Schneider 1:12 bbl - for those light bullets, a dream to shoot.

3) .270 Win - my pre-64 Featherweight, a lighter all-around rifle for good weather use.

4) .338 WM - my Ruger MKII stainless w/ugly plastic stock, a heavier all-around rifle for foul weather.

5) .358 Win - an "only-in-my-dreams-yet-to-be-acquired" Mod 99 Sav. for short to medium range deer and larger game hunting.

Best,
bhtr

Bearhunt'r has about the same ideas, just slightly different flavors:
223 or 22.250, have not yet decided
260Rem (instead of the 6.5Mag)
300WinMag (instead of Wby)
338WinMag or 358Norma, have not yet decided that either
416 Rem at the top for me as well

I don't think the 22LR should count as part of the 5, it's just a given. This seems to pretty much cover anything alive today.

Some others I like but that I probably will never own (purely financial limits):
22 Hornet
250 S25 Souper & 257 Roberts
6.5 Swedish
300 Savage & 308 Win
358STA
416 Rigby
458Lott

Cool post. Nice to think about it this way, as opposed to "what if you could only have 2, or 3, or..."

The five best rounds

1. The round you realise the fight has been heavily mismatched..in your favour
2. The second round generally-when youre over your nerves, and still fresh.
3. The round where you get away with some lowblows and maybe a nice headbutt.
4. The round where he is too tired to come after you so you can take it easy for a bit too.
5. The round the doctor calls a halt because of the nasty head clash you gave him, especially if you were getting a hiding up until then.

Sorry new years eve here-getting silly.

Ummm..

378WBY
7mm Vom hofe
375H&H
577 NE
20mm solothurn- A sturdy AMR

I read ALOT of O'Connor books growing up and a love for the .270 WCF was imprinted on me early. .338 Win Mag is my second favorite although I have little experience with it yet. Third is the .300 Weatherby for many years the fastest .30 and ( to me, anyways) the best. Anything bigger is too much of a good thing. Forth is the 10mm Auto(Norma) Very efficent and powerful for a duty sized autoloader. Knocks down Texas sized hogs with authority. Rounding out the list is the .45 ACP. A true classic.

Mine:

.22 LR <- Who doesn't like it? Excels at small game, cheap and easy to shoot, damn fun.

12ga. <- A good pump 12ga. can do it all, turkey, foul, upland birds, and clays.

6.5x55mm <- A great small/mid bore with excellent ballistics in modern rifles. Lots of history.

9.3x62mm <- Effective, powerful, and versatile for heavy game out to most normal hunting ranges. Again, comes into it's own with modern weapons. Coupled with a 6.5, makes a great 2 rifle battery for all North America.

.45 ACP <- Favorite handgun round EVER. The 1911 is dead sexy, and the .45 punches a big hole whenever and wherever needed. Not too much recoil, either.

In a perfect world, there would also be a .223 Rem varminter, a .257 Bob just because I love it, a .270 Win in a single shot No. 1 for the same reason, a light, handy .308, and the .338WM on the centerfire side of things, with an over/under 12ga. to go with the pump for clays and "old times sake", and a six-shooter .357 Mag in a 6" configuration.
