Just wondering who here only owns one rifle (plus a back up would be okay)....I'd be interested in hearing what'd rifle/cartridge/scope combo you've chosen to do all your big game hunting with. Would also like to know what game you hunt.

I'm not in that class, but have been selling a lot of rifles as of late hoping to simplify some things and hunt with only one or two rifles.

Before I started this I had roughly 18 game rifles. Now I'm down to 7. Probably won't get rid of any more that I currently own, because most of all them have some sentimental value to me.

May God forbid I ever get to that level again.
But if I did I want a custom Mauser Action 30-06 with a VX-III 3x9x40.

I hunt white tails in NC with my savage .243 with a 3-12 scope. It likes anything in 100 grain especially winchester powerpoints. I also hunt coyotes with this rifle. Backup is the marlin 336 in 30/30 open sights. I figure if I hunt hogs or bear 170 grainers will do the trick. I would like to have many more but I am a teacher paying for my wife to go to college so that is out of the question for now.

It could be done but thankfully we dont have to. For game animals it would depend on location but the 7x57 would cover most things for me. That would definately not include small game hunting or birds or rabits on the run.

I hunt with one at a time. I know that doesn't count. I could go back to just one did I have to. I suppose it would come down to a choice between two. A Springfield '06 or a 760 thats also an '06 and really accurate.

Please don't make me go back to what I could afford for scopes when all I could afford was one or the other of those.

I own a few rifles but I have to say I use this one 95% of the time.

Remington 700 DM/SS 300 Win Mag with a VX111 3.5x10 Leupold.

Coyotes, Hogs, Antelope, Deer, Elk, African Plains Game. But the first animal taken with it was a squirrel sitting on a rock. beer

Might have one-gun hunters, but few one-gun owners. I'd go with a 358 win mag, or a 35 Whelen (unless I was hunting Doll sheep, pronghorn, or something requiring a super flat trajectory). In such a case, a 300 wm or 300 weatherby would work, but how boring can you get (didn't even mention the obvious 30's like the -06 and 308).

If you include African DG, a 9.3x62 0r 64mm would work well.

I rarely hunt with just carring one gun 95% of the time I have a pistol on me some where. Smiler

If would be alot less interisting if we all only had one rifle to hunt with.

Well, since technically speaking, only the receiver counts as a firearm, I would go with a Blaser with about 30 different barrels.

For many years I had one Big Game rifle, one Varmint Rifle a shotgun and a .22 and at that time I bought and sold a lot of other guns for profit. With that one Rifle I shot Deer, Elk, Antelope, Bighorn Sheep, Mtn Goat, Coyote etc.
It did and still does serve me very well, it is a Win M70 Lightweight in 30/06 with a 3-9x40 Leupold VX-II.
If it all crumbled and I could only have one rifle it would still be that one 30/06.
I have a lot of other rifles to use now but sometimes (I have to be honest) not having choices made it simpler. For example if I carry my 9.3x62 on an Elk hunt I am limited to hunt areas where I don't want to encounter those 400 yard shots, if I want to carry a 6.5 Swede or a .257 Roberts for deer I know that if I have an elk tag I may have to pass on less than perfect shots if I encounter an elk. With the 30/06 in my hands those decisions never occur.

I own a few also, my favorite rifle is a Mauser in 8X57. Mainly hunt deer and elk here, sometimes antelope. I don't think there is any 1 gun hunters here on accurate reloading. I use other rifles when I feel the need.

I was a one gun hunter for a bit. My choice was a Ruger Mk II in 30-06. I put a 3-9x40 Nikon on top. That was bought for my first elk hunt.

Since then I have bought a couple more as I just wanted a little more power for elk hunting. I figured a 338-378 Wby should do the trick Big Grin. Though we haven't been drawn I did buy a 257 Wby for antelope hunting.

The good ole '06 has pretty much been relegated to a backup except for mule deer which we also haven't been drawn for.

I have quite a few rifles, but the ones (2, same caliber) I take on my hunts are custom built by ourselves for a wildcat of our own design. The 375/404, built on Dakota 76 actios
ns.

With these two rifles, a number of us have killed several hundred game animals in Africa.

These include everything from duikers to elephants.

I am moving towards this one gun for North America concept and think its a good idea.

I am leaning towards the .358 Norma Mag. Won't feel under or over gunned for anything in North America.

then I can get rid of all of my other rifles.

Most of the time, the go-to rifle is a model 70 in 7mm magnum. I have others, but it's the one when I'm not sure what kind of shot will be presented. The first three shots are pretty predictable, and it doesn't seem to wander with humidity or temperature. I now and then think about bedding it, and end up asking why?

I took a different twist until just a few years ago. Instead of one caliber, I had the same rifle in a number of calibers, all sighted in the same, with similar trajectories. All Ruger 77 Mk I's, 22-250,257 Robts,30/06, 35 Whelen, and until recently 416 Taylor. Have a Ruger 22LR, but the safety is MKII style.
It's sort of a one gun kind of thing.

If I am recommending, 270/308/30-06.

Any one of those will cover everything in North America with the proper bullet and proper placement.

If I am picking for my own use, 375 H&H.

The only thing that come close is my 35 Whelen.

I have 35 plus rifles. My go to gun for 90% of everything has been a M700 Sendaro in 25-06........... But, my 30-06 Sako AV with a Ziess 3-9x40 Conquest is perfect for everything.

Of course a pair of 7mm Remington Magnums made by Sauer and Sako are the new Surf and Turf combo.

I've got 1 big game rifle that I have been using for the pasr 40 years. It's a 30/06 LH Remington 700 with a Leupold Var-X III 2.5 x 8. I use 180 grain bullets on everything. It's taken moose, elk, deer, antelope, mtn goat, bighorn, mtn lion.

I'm thinking of retiring it & replace it with a Tikka 30/06 topped off with a Nikon monark 6X. CB

CB,

Don't retire it...the 30-06 flat works

My 1 gun 1 Load is quickly becoming my Kimber Mod 84 in 308 Win. I get an honest 2650 with a 180 grn TSX.

Ain't anything I can't take inside of 250 yards...if I want to go 300 for antelope I jsut hold a little higher.

I don't shoot beyond 300 yards.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

A tikka M690 in 30.06 with a fixed 7x50 scope does everything I need to do in England, from fox to red deer and boar.

Apart from being rather hard on the smaller deer, to be cured by heavier bullets, the results are superlative.

Well, I'm pretty much a 1 gun hunter, except for one thing, I can't use it, in Indiana to hunt whitetails. Since 2003, I have used a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun, .45-70 for all my out-of-state trips.

Thus far, I have takenwild hogs and javelina, in Texas and Tenn., a black bear in Idaho, and 7 head of African plains game, in South Africa.

For whitetais, in Indiana, now that they changed the law, I use a Marlin 1894, in 44 mag.

Mike---That 700 holds alot of memories. I can still remember like it was yesterday---when my Dad & I went down to the gun store to get it. I saved my money from a newspaper route to purchase it. It was a difficult decision on 30/06 or 270. She's a scared old warrior. There's the long gouge from the sheep hunt where I went glissading down the steep avalanche chute. Those rocks came up pretty fast at the bottom. Or when I used her to break my fall on the mtn goat hunt-----I had my pack loaded up heavy---Wanted to cxome out in 1 trip. Lost my balance on a rock started to fall-----she broke my fall----but put a pretty nasty gouge in the stock & scope.

But the real horror was when I drew an oryx tag on the White Sands. I packed the pickup & planned an early start for the next morning. Thieves when thru the neigborhood that night---broke into 35 cars that nite. Mine was one of them. Stole my rifle. Called the police & had the serial number from a letter I had from the police chief-----to use at customs from my South Africa hunt a year earlier. Anyways about 6 months later, there was a terrible accident a pickup rolled over killing 2 young 18 yaer old boys. Their parents came up a week later to clean out the trailor they were renting. The landlord checked it out a day later---found my rifle behind a closet door---called the police on what to do----ran the number & I got her back.

Probably the best "nick" on her was the 1st one. It came when my Dad & I were draging out a buck----out rifles "clanked". My Dad was heart broke a "nick" on my new rifle-----best one IMO.

The best compliment I ever received was from my moose outfitter when he saw her. He just looked at the rifle & said-"I know you can shoot"

Lots of memories. I can't stand the tought of losing her again. I had to scramble to borrow a rifle for the oryx hunt. I decided then to get a backup-----hence the 30/06 Tikka.

Thanks for listening-----CB

for a long time I used one cartridge. The 270 Win. All through the 80's it was a REM 700 BDL with a Bushnell 3x9 sportview scope that I never had a problem with. Then I traded it for a early model Rem SS moutain rifle with a Leupold 2.5-8. Used that all through the 90's and today on occasion. After the turn of century I started buying more rifles and playing with more rifles and cartridges.

But I am starting to get my collection down again. Going to embark on a major safe thinning project in the next couple of months

If I was to pick just one it would have to be a 30-06 that fits well, topped with a leupold 2.5-8.

If I was to pick one from what I currently own, it would be a 338-06.

I am going to my nephew's graduation this weekend, and he is getting a 30-06 with a Leupold scope for his graduation present.

He is not a die hard hunter/ gun nut, nor may never be, but the combo should serve him well for any adventure he may want.

I just can't really think of any situation on this continent, or other, that a 30-06 would fail with a well placed 150-180gr bullet.
