I allways wondered if the level of ballistication/rifle collecting people entered into was 'proxy hunting' ie can't go hunting so next best thing is to play with rifles a bit more.

Given the choice between limitless hunting with one rifle and one load of well matched factory ammo or limitless rifles and loads with one hunt what would you choose?

I only hunt 3 weeks a year but shoot all the time. The older and different the rifle and cartridge the better.Say 1894 can you still shoot in the UK still. I thought they took everything from the law abiding public.

If I could have limitless hunting I would take it. As much as I'm enjoying playing with my rifles the idea i could hunt all i wanted would be to hard to resist. The only problem is what caliber is going to be suitable for coyotes to large game. So where do I sign up for this and when can i quit my job to do all the hunting I want and who's going to pay for it.

Im with montero on this one, I am a hunter who likes guns. Plus punching wholes in paper would get redundant at some point, spending time out in God's creation is always fresh and new. Even when hunting the same old stands from counless years before.

New category: I'm a rifle nut who lives to hunt!

I also hunt with a handgun; I'd hunt with a sharp stick if I had to

I currently have two hunting guns, a rifle and revolver, and each with just one hunting load.

Now, since I'm lucky to get 2 weeks in the field a year, I spend the intervening hours and days by building new guns, and trying new loads.

If I had a choice, I'd live in a little cabin in the woods with those two guns, a shotgun, and a big cache of ammo.

I would take "limitless" rifles and loads.

That's what I do now, different guns and loads for each animal.

1894,
I missed your second question entirely!

I would take the unlimited hunting with one rifle with one factory load (as long as it was my pick of rifle and bullet).

I already have so many rifles it's become a real bother to decide on which to take on any specific hunt (there's too much overlap and redundancy in my 'arsenal' )

Because there is a limited amount of hunting available, I also fill my time with rifles, shooting and reloading.

1894,

I'd jump on limitless hunting with one rifle like a duck on a June bug.

When I lived out West I only had one centerfire rifle, a 22 LR, and 12 and 20 gauge shotguns. I spent a lot of time hunting.

Now I spend a lot of time shooting, rather than hunting and have several rifles.

I started as only a hunter with limited resources and guns. In later years I hunt less but the hunts seem to be more intense than before. I now shoot several times a week to be better prepared for the limited hunting. I also have come to love rifles and reloading and discovered the fun building and tweaking loads can be. I just plain love to shoot. I duck and goose hunt. I deer and Elk hunt with an occasional trip to Alaska. I could take unlimited hunting with one rifle but would much prefer unlimited guns and hunting. Good shooting.

I'm a hunter, not an equipment collector. Over time, I've come to realize that much about myself.

Over the last half-dozen years, I've changed my program considerably when it comes to firearms. I used to avidly collect pre-64 Winchester firearms, Belgian-made Brownings, and fancy custom rifles. Except for one very beautiful walnut-stocked custom rifle that I can't replace, I've sold all of the collector firearms, as well as my run-of-the-mill hunting rifles.

Instead, I own far fewer hunting rifles than I used to, but the ones I do have are all custom-built to very high standards, and made to perform in the field. My basic battery is made up of a .270 Win., a .300 Win., a .338 Win., a .375 H&H, and a .416 Rem. All are based on Model 70 actions, all wear identical McMillan stocks, all shoot with superb accuracy, and all of them function perfectly. With these rifles, all metal parts are of good steel - no potmetal, which I detest.

I'd rather use the dickens out of these rifles on as many hunts as I can, and then 30-35 years later, when too old to hunt, I can look at them and remember the adventures I've enjoyed with these rifles.......

I know guys who get fancy rifles made on a regular basis, but never use them. These guns occupy shelf space. That's their function. I don't care how fancy these rifles are, they carry no honor with them.

I know other guys who have huge collections of stock factory rifles - most of which never get fired, let alone hunted with - and with more on the way. These guys never seem to have any money to hunt with........

I've invited one fellow on I don't know how many hunts over the years, but he can never afford to go. He's always got money for more rifles and more gear, however...

I saw this years ago and that's why I changed my program: Guns are a lot easier to come by than solid hunting experience. That's why I'm a hunter and no longer a gun nut.

1894,
I'm afraid that "unlimited hunting"would be wasted on me;I enjoy my time spent at the range.
This particular year is strictly hunting oriented. That is because I'm developing a new bullet for a new load in my new rifle.Obviously,I am a little Slow.

My life has been both, but given a choice I'll take hunting, but I'd not be completely happy about it..actually at this point in my life I could go either way since I'll be too old to hunt in a few years, but could still shoot I guess...Hell maybe I'll just play golf and fish or play checkers and chase wimmen!

When I was young I was definitly a hunter, all I wanted to know about a rifle was, "Will it kill a deer"? Now I'm at the other end of the spectrum, a rifle nut whose only question about another hunt is, "Would it prove this rifle could kill a deer"? Ain't gettin' old the pits?

I am a vegetarian that eats meat whenever he can.

I am a gun nut that hunts whenever he can, whether with rifle, shotgun, handgun or spear. I just don't have the time for archery, as the others are so satisfying.

I could go either way on your alternatives, as long as that one hunt would last five years and include the entire globe with one rifle, in either 375 or 416 caliber.

I think I spy the real question: Live in US with all the guns you want but limited hunting, or live in UK with limited guns but hunting all year round. Tough choice... I want more guns AND more hunting!

Deerdogs, you hit the head of the nail! I just would like to change the word UK to Sweden. There is a lot of good hunting here nearly all year, but our beloved left wing socialist government have limited the right to keep a gun. As a hunter I am not allowed to more than six long guns. For each gun I have to apply an pay about $15 (SEK 175) and than wait a month or so for getting the licence. I already gor six guns, which I dont want to give away. But last friday I sw a BRNO .22 Hornet from 1960, that I realle want to have. But I will not get it, as the socialist have decided that I dont need it. Gun regulations i Europe are going to be what they were in the old kommunist world of Soviet. mad: Totalitarians are afraid of guns in the hands of citizens!

But back to the main question: personally Im a dedicated hunter, who loves shooting interesting guns at the range and in the field.

Best regards,

Fritz K

Deerdog and Fritz, I think you both are mistaken. Here in the grand ol' US of A, something is always in season. We enjoy varmit hunting year round to keep in trim, and then when the crisp days of autumn arrive we turn our attentions larger game. But during the interim we also are allowed ( for the most part ) to purchase and play with whatever our bank accounts will allow. It seems, for the moment anyway, that we are enjoying the best of both worlds.

Well now, I'm either a gun nut first and hunter second, or a hunter first and gun nut second. I don't know. How can you separate them? I do know bowhunting comes in third for me and I'm not an archery nut at all. I'm perfectly happy with one bow. I'd never be happy with only one gun!

My post showed up fine here. Why not in "two guns for the world"?

Well, Crowrifle, I didnt state anything about your american hunting. It seems that seasons are nearly the same at both sides of the Atlantic pool - but I really envy you for your freedom regarding arms.

Long may that continue! I was not counting varmints as those 400 yard shots are not what I consider real hunting , which to me is stalking deer in the woods.

Let's see, Hmmm. Good question. I hunt big game when I can draw the tags. Prarie dogs in the summer, dove and quail in the fall and winter and coyotes when the birds are scarce. I hunt with rifles, pistols, muzzleloaders and shotguns. I also shoot trap and train bird dogs. I'll take the more hunting option if you can find a prarie dog/coyote rifle that will reliably take elk.

The question makes me stop and think. I believe that I have gone "full circle" and then some. I started out as strictly a hunter, who became a rabid gun nut, who longs to hunt as much as possible.

I've just finished putting the finishing touches on a "new" (.338-404X2.95) rifle for an Alaskan moose hunt, which is supposed to start Sept 10. At looking at my records, I have put 936 rounds through this rifle, while wringing out what bugs that I could find (most only existed in my mind). I have packed and 'am re-packing for this hunt, several times.
My family doctor called me last Friday, to say that I needed to see a specialist concerning a lower intestine "problem". Saw the specialist, who has set up an appointment for some "exploratory" work tomorrow. Now, this "specialist" knows that come hill, or high water, I'm going hunting next Thursday.
Right now, I would much rather be hunting (all of the time) with some plain-vanilla factory rifle, than waiting for tomorrow's tests.

Good hunting,
Dale (M70)
