Hey gents, me and the fam are headed to JH this week for 3 days then driving to West Yellowstone for 2 more days.
We don't really have much planned. We are horseback riding one morning and flyfishing another. Other than that we left our days open to hike and explore.
We do have a 4x4 suv rented.
What are some suggestions as to good hikes and maybe an evening drive to see wildlife?
Thanks.

Perry

drop down to the west and take a ride through Hoback Junction then when you've seen the Wyoming Desert for 10 minutes turn around and go back up through the Canyon again.

unless you wanna see more desert.

if you wanna see a Geyser for free stop here in Soda Springs at the top of the hour.
they'll let it fly.
then you can cut through Tin Cup Canyon drop out at Freedom Wyoming, and take a tour of the gun factory there.
then it's a short trip up the wind river canyon [past the turn to Hoback] to J-Hole.

other than that it's just trees and stuff.

In the park, your best wildlife viewing will probably be in Lamar Valley, if it’s open. Not sure what the snow situation will be this early. You might also consider heading down to Teton Park. Pretty spectacular scenery there and a lot more elk than we saw in Yellowstone when we were there 2 years ago. There is always the Buffalo Bill historical Center in Cody.

While not a hike, one of our favorite activities in Jackson is a whitewater float trip on the Snake. There are several good companies that you could check on -- Barker-Ewing has been around forever, and also Mad River. Alternatively a scenic float trip offered by the same companies on an upper reach of the Snake is a good way to see wildlife.

We've enjoyed the hikes along/around Jenny Lake and String Lake in Great Teton NP... though not sure whether snowpack might affect those this time of the year. If open early in the day is better in terms of how busy the trails might be.

There's a great little restaurant and wine shop on the main drag in Jackson called Bin 22 -- interesting small-plate food choices and a great wine selection.

If you drive out the road along the Gros Ventre River and then turn left at the road heading toward the Teton Science School you'll have a good chance of seeing bison that tend to hang around that eastern edge of the elk refuge. Also might see moose in the river bottom along the Gros Ventre.

We always carry bear spray while hiking, especially if not on one of the heavily-used and busy trails.

Well, I meant to say Grand Teton NP... have been planning a trip to Great Basin NP this morning and somehow my brain didn't make the transition very well!
