I said from the beginning. He is going to do what he is going to do. His behavior is foolish. His rational is so merit and stupid. Experience breeds complacency. Complacency breeds tragedy. Those who are arrogant w basic recognized safety. Who compare grabbing a limb and doing a pull-up from an uncontrolled fall as safe as a harness is a foolish. I hope the limb never breaks or he leans too far out.

8 years of jumping from planes and helicopters into canopy. Often having to climb down a drop rope from 100 + feet when the chute is hung up. Free climbing cliffs. And heym was never there to tell command to give us elevators!

I'm sure you're a proper bad ass and all but I really don't see why you're taking LH to task on this thread. He simply shared that a family friend fell from a tree stand recently and is suffering the consequences of not using a harness. Simply relaying a cautionary tale about a unfortunate event. As they say, YMMV. We can all learn from other's mishaps or ignore it. That's all.

Truthfully there are safer ways of getting up in a tree than TB40’s method. If the risk vs rewards are ok in his judgement, he should do as he feels reasonable… although I wouldn’t recommend his method. Me? I don’t like heights much. I used deer stands in the past, and didn’t have safety harnesses. Always felt I was a step away from disaster. Now it’s either a tower blind with a good ladder or ground blinds for me. I’m too chicken for climbers or ladder stands. I don’t want more laws or lawsuits about these things, just make your own call and be responsible for your own actions. Loss of your ability to hunt and walk because of something preventable will really upset you if it ever happens. A safety harness is relatively minimal in both expense and effort in my opinion. I’ve seen too many hip and spine fractures to feel complacent about the risk.

I simply relate what I do, telling no-one what they can and should do. I am comfortable in my abilities, and as I said in my first post, will change when I no longer am. Heym loves to go off on anyone who doesnt think just like him, as his reply shows. People free dive, free climb and do a host of what others consider dangerous behavior. The people who do them are comfortable with their risks, and skill set, and dont need a lecture by those who dont agree.

Everyone recognizes you are going to do what you are going to do. The description of your behavior and rational given for that behavior is a foolish position. You are not going to Tarzan yourself from safety from an uncontrolled fall. Your after plan is not anywhere near as safer as using proper and maintained safety equipment. It is not even close. I hope the day that this person suffers and will continue to suffer never befalls you. If that upsets you, so be it. You can start a thread about how certain you are to be able to grab a king in the way down and pull up yourself to safety. You will not get anyone to sanction your idea as proper procedure, practice, or behavior for hunting from elevated stands. Yeah, you assert that is fine for you to do. You are going to hear no it is not, but you are free to knock yourself out.

Right back to, none of your business what I do. I have caught myself several times ( not from a hunting stand) from a fall. Dont tell me what I can and cant do.

Just had a couple carpenter friends stop by. They use ladders and staging in construction. self employed, they do not have to comply with OSHA. They both said, yes at some point you fall, but are always aware, and grab what they can, to stop. They said everyone does. A year or two ago, I wrote on AR about going to a menonite barn building. No ladders or staging used. The younger men climb the posts up and down, jump or swing across rafter to rafter. drop and catch floor to floor. The old men cut and direct from the ground. Heym, you need to go to a barn raising and tell them all how stupid they are, and what they do, cant be done. They have done it for generations, so that will teach them. One of the elders would say in Dutch, "go back to your office young-un, let the men work" while everyone laughed.

In my pre retirement life. I was and EMT, LEO did some search and rescue. In my career I responded to many life threating events. I am a firm believer in safety equipment. I can't count how many dead people I have found or help recover. Because they failed to use safety equipment available to them. Seat belts, PFD's ect.. The ones that lived to tell their story. Almost always have the same mind set. I will never be in an accident, I am great swimmer. It is mostly a free country, your allowed to do unintelligent things. But remember it is your friends and family that well bear the fruits of your pride and stubbornness. If your being dead or worse being crippled. They have to get you in and out of bed change your diaper, fed you ect. Be safe and I hope nothing bad happens.

PD, I wont disagree with you. My issue is with heym saying, it's stupid, you cannot catch yourself if your falling. He is flat out lying when he says that. It just doesnt happen every time for everybody.
