I'd have to agree with 8MM, most guys I know are way over scoped. What they really need is to practice more, and not just at 100 yards either.

If you loose game you've shot then you obviously need a bigger gun.

Get a bigger gun and you don't have to pick your shot so well.

I can shoot well off the bench so I'm ready to hunt...offhand, laying in a mud puddle, shaking and breathing hard from running.

I just submitted a story on this topic that will appear in July.

A bullet's trajectory is only affected by the "horizontal" distance when shooting up/downhill. Time of flight always matters.

And the biggest myth of all (and the one with which I closed my story on the biggest shooting myths): Gun writers are always right.

Buddy tried to tell me that barrels with a right hand twist will gradually drift to the right (if you only shoot them far enough).

My second favorite is currently published in a half dozen gun mags on the shelf in the grocery store today;

"Short fat cartridges generate less felt recoil than long skinny cartridges (even though they shoot the same weight bullet at the same velocity from the same length barrel out of the same weight gun.)"

Never knew that about bigfoots (feets?)

My favorite myth is : Large, slow bullets 'bust brush' better than small bullets. So just blaze into that brush w/ that 35 Remington, it'll make it through to the deer.

MYTH: a double lung shot behind the shoulder with a bullet prevents the game from running as far as a properly placed arrow in the same place.

MYTH: a heavier bullet is always good insurance for a pass-through, no matter what the range.

MYTH: Ruger rifle actions are not built well enough to be tack drivers. (not my first choice of course but most definitely a MYTH).

This is not a myth.

Actually, the BARREL won't drift Wink, but the bullet will drift to the right. A left hand twist will cause the bullet to drift to the left.

This has long been known, Elmer wrote about it many years ago. Here's a very technical discussion of the phenomenon:

The two worst myths, among the many that affect shooting, are, IMHO.

1. It don't matter what ya shoot, long as ya kin shoot it.

2. Someone (anyone) is a "natural" rifleshot.
