Top antelope is my 2006 7mag kill, 150 Btip, 333 yards, bottom antelope is 2005 Muzzleloader kill at over 200. The top one is mounted on a Jonus wall pedestal, the bottom is a Research "Heavy faced Oregon."

Very nice trophies indeed. Please believe me when I say I am not trying to start anything negative but, why in the first and second picture does the top mount (left shoulder) look so far away from the wall? In the second picture it looks like you can see part of the form, almost like there was not enough cape. The last picture looks perfectly normal.

Again, those are excellent trophies, I'm just curious about the left shoulder of the top mount.

GA Deer Hunter,
That upper one is what's called a wall pedestal mount, not a standard shoulder mount. It uses a different form and is supposed to look like that.

It is mounted on a "wall pedestal" manikin, meaning there is not a full shoulder flush surface to efface the wall when hanging. What you see that looks like manikin foam is a yellowish leather backing.

The bottom one is mounted on a simple shoulder manikin where the entire backside effaces the wall.

Take a look at this webpage from McKenzie, and you'll see a wall pedestal manikin from several angles.

Like I said, excellent trophies and I am not trying to say anything negative. It should be obvious from my questions that I have never seen a "wall pedestal" mount before.

Thank you for the information.

No problem. Wall pedestals are sort of "the latest and greatest." And that is opinion anyway. Plus, they've actually been around for a few years.

I have a few deer on these manikins.

When my brother and I were hanging them, he said he thinks he likes antelope more than deer now.

Maybe it's just a few of us, but I really like the variety of antelope capes. We think they look very cool.

They damn sure do! I really like the way you balanced the turns on those two, it makes the wall space they occupy look great.

Nice looking taxidermy for sure.
Great job Doc!

Beautiful Pronghorns!

Where did you take them?

Please, Tell us about the hunts - one was taken with a Muzzleloader?

I'd like to hear that story.

I should have mine back from the Taxidermist in June

I hope it looks as good as those two.

Sure. 2005 ML kill, unit 32 near Casper, WY. Knight ML, 185 barnes hollow point boat tail/sabot with 3 "sticks" of American Pioneer pwdr. Distance, 235 yards. I had ranged a small tree that he was behind and it ranged at 211 and I couldn't tell how much further behind it he was but I knew it wasn't too far. I put the bullet in the shoulder and dumped him. We have it on video. When we got to him, I ranged the tree where I shot from and it was 235.

2006, same unit, different land. My brother shot his buck about 10 seconds after legal shooting time on Oct. 5. We drove about 2 miles down the road and found a decent size group of antelope, roughly 14 animals, 4 of which were bucks, but only 2 shooters.

The land was flat for the most part with some channel ditches throughout, which could certainly hide me for a stalk. I got as close as I could to them, climbed out of the ditch and ranged the group at 315 yards. They were all bedded but the buck I shot. For whatever reason, a smaller buck stood up and begin to "hang" with one of the bedded Does. The dominant buck ran him off quickly, and pushed him right in my direction.

The lesser buck ran to about 90 yards of me, then did a 180 back to the group when he saw me. The big boy cut him off and chased him at an angle, both quartering away from me now. They barely passed the group. I had a second or 2 so I ranged him when he stopped broadside...333 yards.

I had the 7mag set up, observing them through the scope the whole time. My brother had the video camera on the tripod, filming it all. When the big one stopped to watch the lesser buck keep moving off, I dumped him with a high shoulder shot. 150 Btip/IMR4831. Small hole in, small hole out. You couldn't even see any exit hole unless you searched for it. The only blood was coming from his mouth.

The bullet performed as expected, made mush of any soft tissue in the front thoracic cavity.

Of course my brother, Mr. Video Extraordinaire, was filming the lesser buck the whole time. His excuse was that he was over 400 yards behind me so he couldn't tell which one was the bigger one.

Nice 'lopes. I shot a decent buck in 2005 in the Okla. panhandle and had him mounted as a wall pedestal. I think I'll have a whitetail done that way as well once I get one on the ground.

Speaking of hunting antelope I love it. I went and help my buddy that lives in the Okla panhandle fil some deprivation permits last weekend. He had 7 mature does down whitin about 5.5 hours. I have some pictures once I get them downloaded from my camera. Three of the does were horned with one having some really nice hooks. It was the craziest thing I think I've ever seen on an antelope.

Looking at those I really regret not getting a mount made of my last one. I just did the horns on a plaque because of the lack of space in my gunroom. Wifezilla is making me buy a new house this year and the only good thing about that is that the only room suitable for location, etc for my gun room is 50% larger than the room that I have now.

Frank, I tell ya, you REAAAALLLLY should have had that one mounted! Dang dude. Look at that cape! It is beautiful and robust with orange!

If ever in doubt, at least keep the cape and send it for fleshing and salting or even wet tan, so you can mount it later!

Hate to rub salt in the wound but if I had killed one that pretty, it would have been straight to the taxidermist.

Gidday Guys,

Gee I envy your being able to hunt your antelope.

They and Mule deer are the trophies I dream of as the most attractive and before I shuffle off this mortal coil I shall acheive this goal.

To me they have a special mystique. Maybe the childhood dreams of being a cowboy are working out here.

Well done Doc, hunting with family is something special and more so when it is with great stories like yours.

Happy Hunting

Hamish
