Until I get a .338 WM barrel on my Parker-Hale 1200 action, I'd have to say my Win 70 in .270 because that's all I've got that'll legally take deer and elk in my state.

That would be my custom S&W 1500 in 375/284 with the 285 gr Speer Grand Slam at about 2500fps. (although after testing the 260 gr Nosler Ballistic tips, my mind may change)

My Model 70 in 7mm magnum, 140-grain Partition bullets with IMR7828 and benchrest primers. If it was the only gun though, I'd get a heavier barrel, and put the Leupold 4.5-14X on it from the other gun.

It is not enough to fight for natural land and the west; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it's still there. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends...Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much: I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those deskbound men with their hearts in a safe-deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this: you will outlive the bastards.

A 35 Whelen improved. You can shoot cheap and very deadly bullets meant for handguns on up to 300gr heavys if you wanted with 225-250's likely being the most useful. I get 2830fps with 225gr nosler partitions. For elk on down, this is a hard load to beat. And it is not just a close range round, run the numbers, it will go on out to the limmits of where most shooters run out of ability.

LOKEY,
If you're talking about the lower 48 only, I have it in the safe right now. Rem. M-700 BDL, .30-06, 165 grain Nosler Partition in front of 59.5 grains of H-4350 and a CCI BR2. I wouldn't even look back.
If Alaska is included, make it the 180 grain Nosler Partition. The scope is a Leupold Vari-X III 1.75x-5x. With the exception of the scope I took everything in Alaska with that combination when I lived there and I don't think it would let me down
for a second time.

105mm cannon. 37 pound, HE shell, over about 15000 grains of cordite;-)

Actually first choice is 16 caliber, 2900 pound shell, at 2900 fps.

Not being allowed to use those, I would love to try a 4 bore, with 1/4 pound, hard cast, lead slug, perfered LBT, at about 2200 fps.

After I got out of the body cast, for the broken shoulder, I would go back to:

Colt 45: 345 grains over 29 grains of H-110
and about 1550 fps, and go looking for a cape buffalo, or a large gang car, to fire it at...;-)

What I have is my Mausers (husky and browning) in 30-06 with 180 grain bullets, and they work well.

But I think for a more versatile overall rifle that would guarantee no wounded animals running off, I would like either a 9.3X62 or a .300 win mag. Either of these two calibers should work equally well on whitetail as on moose.

The .338 WM does it all. A 225 grain Bearclaw or 230 Failsafe @2900 FPS keeps ya feeling well-protected.

Who was the guy that said a Ruger No 1 in .270 Win? Are you crazy? You would chase a big Alaskan Brown with that? Or a cape buffalo? You need a wheelbarrow to carry your nuts around in!

One gun to hunt everything? Well that would seem to be a NO BRAINER on this end. Now what with all those different .338Ultra mag or .300-Ultra mag bullets to choose from, it would have to be a 338 Ultra mag or 300 Ultra mag from start to finish.

Just ONE?!?! I love my 300 Wby Mag with 180 gr. Nosler partitions or BT's, BUT since we are talking about everything, big and small, give me my Win Mod 70 Featherweight in 7mm RemMag, IMR 7828 pushing 160 gr Nosler Partitions out of the barrel and looking through my Leupold !!!! Just like GOOD Texas BBQ !! Don't get any better than that!! GREG

I'd stick with my M70 classic stainless 26" 300 Wby in a Brown stock with a VX-III 3.5-10X40 in Leupold QR mounts. Handloads featuring 180 failsafe or 165 XLC, I'm having a hard time deciding if the extra 15 grains really contributes anything when discussing bullets of this type. Certainly the animals I've shot with each haven't offered any documentable difference.

O.k. I'll play the game too. 1 gun 1 caliber. I guess I have to ask if it will be shot more than one weekend per year? I see a lot of 1 weekend guns as being a Remington 7400 jam-o-matic in 30-06 and 165 gr bullets. Don't get me wrong, that has merit. It's a working combination. Right up there with the 30-30 lever gun. But for me it would be a .280 Remington in a Mauser style action and a 3-9 scope. As far as one load........I can't live that way. Varmints 100gr bullets. Deer130 to 150gr bullets, Elk 170 gr bullets. I don't hunt big bear or in Africa so there it is.

Well, these games hurt, but it would have to be my 40 year old German Weatherby Mk 5 in 300 Wby, 1.5-6X Hensoldt Wentzlar scope in claw mounts. With 200 gr Nosler Partitions at 300 fps, it will do for anything in the westen hemisphere, and most of the critters in Africa as well. FWIW - Dan
