If you had only one gun, and one load to shoot out of it what would it be. This goes for everything, coyotes, antelope, deer, elk, moose, bears, opposums, coons, Osama, whatever. I'd opt for a Rem. 700 actioned .300 Win. Mag stoked with 180 Swift Sirrocos and topped off with a Leupold 4.5-14. What can't you do with that on this, or any, continent? ~lokey
Oh gee, not too hard here... M70, 3006, 3X9, 180 gr premium bullets, but I'm thinking if I had to hunt bigger bears too I'd opt for 190 grains, as I'd rather figure out trajectory for 190's on antelope than figure out how to get new underwear in the woods when hunting the big 'uns.

I'm with John S on the load, although my rifle is different -- It's a Remington 700 Classic. I haven't settled on a scope for it yet.

Sitting here looking at it--AAI SWM in 338 Lapua with a Swar 6x24x50 with target knobs. My load is 94.2 grs of IMR7828 with the 250 gr Sierra MK. My gun liked the IMR 7828 best so what can I say.

dang it, these questions hurt my brain i'd have to say 30'06 w/ one-eighties or one-sixty fives...in a premium offering, the availability of ammo anywhere is way too good to ignore....if i could have two guns however, i'd add a .375 H&H or Ultra mag in there too...preferably with 300gr premiums.

30/06 & 3-9 leupold loaded with 48 grains of AR2208 behind a 165 gr woodleigh protected point. I do not think that there is much this load would not stop with a well placed hit.

35 Whelen with 225 gr anythings. Hay guys forget buying ammo, if you are only allowed one gun you wont be able to buy any anyway. You will have to reload for them all.

1874 Sharps in .45-100 (2.6) with a 550 gr Gunn-Danielson paperpatched bullet over 100 grains of Swiss #5. No one ever said I like run of the mill stuff.

I have a totally rebuilt, custom Model 70 Winchester with a Leica 3.5-10X scope chambered in .300 Win. Mag. with a 24" barrel. My standard load is Winchester cases, Federal 215 primers, and enough Reloader 22 to reach 3075 fps. with 180 gr. Nosler Partition Protected Points.

Ruger 77mkII .338WM, stainless,timney,leupold 3X9X40,Hogue stock and 71g Imr4831,CCI250,rem brass topped with a 250g Hornady sp.
Caliber would be the grand old 30/06 with 165 Partitions in either a model 70 Classic or a Sako 75 stainless synthetic... probably the Sako with either a Swarovski 3-9x36 or Kahles 3-9x42 with the TDS reticle in Sako's mounts.
I agree with the last post, except my Model 7 in .350 Rem. Mag. shoots 225 grain X-Bullets less than an inch and close to 2700 fps. Flat, hard-hitting and not too much recoil with the McMillan stock.

I'll have to go with the old .270 Win firing 130 Nosler partitions. I figure way more bullets will be sent down range after varmits & medium sized game than the larger species. Interestingly enough, I just got my hands on an old Jack O'Connor's book and here's his take:
"The nearest thing I know of to the mythical all-round rifle with one load for everything--woodchuck and jack rabbits, moose and white-tails in the brush, grizzlies, goats, and sheep above timberline and across big canyons--is a good .270 with either the 130-gr. Silvertip or Core-Lokt. That's a fine varmit combination and absolutely ideal for sheep and goats. Particularly with the round-nose Core-Lokt, it is satisfactory for brush, although no bullet travelling that fast is perfect by any means. Probably the moose and grizzly hunter ought to have more power.
Nevertheless, to sum it all up, the man who wants to stick to one rifle and one load can't beat a .270 with a strongly constructed 130-gr., bullet."
