The reason I am asking is that we have just gotten it on our sat receiver. I have tried watching a few of the shows, but, sadly, I gave up on every occasion. As there seems to be far too much talking and advertising!

Sadly, that seems to be the case. There are some good shows, but you have to watch a few to pick them out. I like Wednesdays better than most because of the "Best Defense" show. Most of the other hunting shows are about whitetail deer hunting, another "who cares" for me. I would rather see hunts I can't do by walking out the back door, like more Africa, which has been the case lately, or other species. There are a few good shows on. But most are poorly done. Perhaps one in ten. Advertising pays the bills so they all have that. Boddington's Tracks across Africa is one of the best.

I get the Sportsman's Channel, the Outdoor Channel, and Versus, all of which have stuff on them. My favorite is Gold Fever. Just kidding. The shows I TIVO are TAA, Hornady's Africa, Shockey's show, Hunt for Big Fish (Trevor Gowdy), and the SCI show (although I don't always watch it). I also like "On Your Own Adventures." There are some fishing shows that are good. TAA is good because it profiles different hunters; I get tired of seeing the same guy doing all the killing. I also get really tired of seeing TC blather all over. I like Shockey, but for cripes sakes, the guy used to trust his life to Knight. He really needs to reword his tagline to say "I trust my bank account to..." I wish these shows would acknowledge what these trips cost, how much was paid by sponsors, etc. To tell the truth, if I am buying the hunt, I stay away from anything I have seen on TV or read about in a mag...I assume that advertising isn't free and I am the one paying for these hosts getting to hunt.

The shows market audiences are the vast majority of Anerican hunters. If you find them as objectionable as I do, well you know how you fit in with the majority of American hunters.

Gave up both the Outdoor channel and Sports channel about a year ago. I enjoyed Shockey, Boddington, and the varmint calling segments. I decry the feminization, the faked emotion, the almost total emphasis on trophy taking as opposed to the experience and joy of being in the field. The things I think are important are not what sells or drives advertisers. As Popeye is want to say, I'd had all I could stands, cuz I can't stands no more". I will watch the Tour De France in July GWB

to enjoy the outdoor channels you really need a dvr so it zaps out the commercials and you watch the show latter. you sure can see alot of shows in the time period one takes up with commercials

I didn't know anything about hunting TV until recently and I still know very little. I did get to spend a week with Tim Herald last October and he does a lot of NA shows and a lot of deer hunting shows. I'm not one to cover up my ignorance so I asked Tim lots of questions about the hunts we see on TV. One of the questions I asked was why in the world are there so many treestand deer hunts with bow or muzzle loaders and what about all these f---in' turkey hunts. The answer was obvious when you thought about it. These are the hunts that most NA hunters can identify with and see real value in. This is what the vast majority wants to see. Mark MARK H. I watch Boddington and Shockey and the predator hunting. If it has anything to do with Whitetails, Sitting in a blind, or most of the Long Range Hunting I won't watch it. On Your Own Adventures (OYOA) is a pretty good show and their new season starts in June sometime. The ONYA guys run a Forum on their website and there is a pretty good group of guys over there. They are also very active in the Montana legislature to help protect and promote the "everyday" person hunting rights versus priviatization that many TV show personalities promote. All I get is versus an all they seem to show are ice hockey and bullriding. I guess Comcast must be anti-hunting or something. Considering the shit on TV these days, I'm about to pull the plug on the whole damn mess anyway. Paul B.

I cannot tolerate the "music" imposed upon the events in the outdoor programs. The so-called "music" adds nothing but noise, makes the on camera conversations difficult to hear, and distracts the TV viewer. Those programs cost serious money to produce. I wonder at the intelligence and awareness of the producers; don't *they* have any common sense???!

I was so disappointed when I finally hunted Africa that my stalks weren't accompanied by rythimic drum beats and Swahili chanting. How disillusioning! But I guess you don't get the full treatment if you book with a bargain outfitter. Maybe next time I'll spend more and get the music I had expected.

Mark - Truth is, there's another answer to your question. The reason you see so many of these worthless tree-stand deer hunts and turkey hunting is, they are CHEAP & EASY! These hunts are cheap to do, cheap to film/produce, travel & accommodation expenses are cheap! Alot of these hunts can be done basically in your back-yard, etc. JMO.
|
One of Us |
Aaron You are obviously correct that tree stand and turkey hunts are cheap. That of course is not the reason you see so many. The reason is as Mark states---That's what Americans want to watch. That means $$$$. If the majority wanted to watch hunts in Outer Mongolia then thats what would flood the TV. It just so happens they want to watch people shoot whitetails and turkeys, period. Sad but true.

Sg Olds - You're right, the majority of viewers relate to tree-stand deer hunting/turkey hunting, without a doubt. But, having done lots of TV shows over the past 10 yrs. I assure you, the over-riding factor in what you see, is money. On any hunt, including a 2-day antelope hunt, they are always concerned about the costs associated with getting the show. Many of them, would love to do hunt other species/film it for tv. Fact is, the costs are simply prohibitive. Think of the cost of filming (cameraman)/travel/hunting/accommodation, etc, of a 10-Day moose hunt in AK, all for one animal. The same for a buffalo hunt in Africa. Versus the same costs for many of these shows to film 3 or 4 turkey hunts, within a day's drive of their home. Sponsorship dollars are the only money generation for many of the tv shows, thus they must be able to produce the entire "season", within this budget. Most are not Shockey/Waddell/Lakosky's, receiving additional money from endorsements, outfitting territories, or higher sponsorship dollars, because their show is extremely popular (more viewers = more money). Certainly, the whitetail deer will always be the most sought after specie in the U.S., thus the most popular. Like you, I just wish we had more shows that travel to far off locales, hunting unique and interesting places. I simply cannot stand the tree-stand/box blind deer & turkey shows any more.

Saeed, Tuesday Night Pursuits are pretty good when they are new (may be in re-runs right now). Unfortunately, you are not going to get away from the advertising as that is what pays the bills. SHould be a reminder to everyone on this site how fortunate we are to have a "sponsor" that requires nothing more than "playing nice" (or "nice enough")

Some of the shows totally suck. Others are good. Some have elements that are good. Has anyone seen the film of the two whitetails fighting at the beginning of Christensen Outdoors? That is a serious piece of film.

One of the shows I really like is Under Wild Skies, which I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet. However, I wish Tony Makris would hunt with someone other than Johan Calitz, although I do enjoy Johan's point of view. Graybird: I almost mentioned that show, but I get really tired of seeing Johann Calitz. It seems like a walking commercial for him. It is starting to get that way with TAA and Chifuti Safaris. And I do get tired of seeing Tony Makris behind the trigger all the time. Show me a normal guy, who agrees to have his safari filmed. That is a good story.

The only one I ever make an attempt to watch is the one with Craig Boddington and Ivan Carter. Everything else is an info-mercial for whatever company is sponsoring the thing. Under Wild Skies is also pretty good. Even the rocks don't last forever.

starting? If I have to listen to C.B. try to convince me that the only acceptable trophy is a worn down, 34" dagga boy (of which Chifuti apparently has many) one more time, I'm going to puke. Oh look, it's 4:30 on Sunday, Daddies turn on the TV kids, TAA is on. Oops, never mind, it's someone hunting buffalo with Chifuti.

Aaron, Definitely a good point about cost to the small operations putting these shows on. I swear some of these shows are done by two guys with a video camera and a case of Bud Lite. Mark MARK H. Yep! Scary thing is, that's not too far from the truth. It takes money, and alot of it, to really produce a good quality TV show. Not to mention alot of time and dedication too. My buddy Jim Shockey harassed the heck out of me a few years ago, about why I didn't do my own TV show. Fact is, after working with alot of the other guys, I realized how much WORK and time consumption, it really is! Still looking, just haven't found the right fit.

You forgot "Pigman". The Eastmans I can relate too. Questions: How many of those foofy scarves does Makris have? Does Tiffany have a new "Pair" When is Shockey going to have his Dad and Dad in law on again? Can Uncle Ted squeeze any more commercials in? He shoots the animals in the first two minutes and you don't see them again until the last two. Where can I get a hat like the predator quest guy has? Wow!! Will Jeff Foxworthy ever make any jokes about the Techomonti Way? (spelling) The only questions I'm interested in an anwering is question number two. Lets see some more of them. DW

I'd watch that show over all the over edited crap thats there now. Todays outdoor TV is 99.9% JUNK!!!!!! 100% money driven... I remember the first vidoes I ever watched in the late 80's no production value and no music. Those were the best days of outdoor TV. ...then came along Jackie Bushman and it has been a snowball headed for hell ever since. ________________________________________________ Maker of The Frankenstud Sling Keeper Proudly made in the USA Acepting all forms of payment

Yes I have it and most of it is trash. I cannot believe some of the over emotional, estrogen filled, poor excuses for men that I have ever seen. They gripe about everything and they live in a world where money determines how big of an animal you kill which makes me sick. When the hunt and animals are more about the size of your pocketbook, I lose interest real quick. Free men should not be subjected to permits, paperwork and taxation in order to carry any firearm. I get them all and watch none of them. I get tired of being talked down to by so called experts. I like Boddington and Ivan. Proven hunters. I get tired of 7 minutes of program for 9 minutes of commercial. It still seems to me it's all about the equipment and very little about adventure.

The outdoor channel in my opinion is junk,I'm tried of see the same old people doing all the hunting and telling you what you just saw, like your a small child.I would like to see real people hunting, lots of hard work, swearing, sweating and packing out the game--real life. Yes Mr.Adimistrator, there is far to much BS-ing during those shows. Why one show I watched shows a guy playing a trick on another hunter, using a dead frigging rattlesnake. Now of course the snake was dead but opening a truck door and finding a coiled snake on the front seat, would give an old man like me a blessed heart attack. The other complaint I have is far to many commercials about various products etc. They show 8 minutes or less of hunting and the rest is product advertizing. I hear that your videos on hunting are far better sir. All in all, the only show I watch is Tracks Across Africa.
