what would they be? Mine would include (1) Model 39 Marlin 22 carbine (2) Reminton 870 12 gauge (3) Brno ZG-47 30-06 (4) pre-64 M-70 375H&H (5) DS Arms FAL semi-automatic. For a gun nut like myself who mostly favors high quality, classic sporting rifles & shotguns, this list represents a lot of compromises because many of my favorite guns are not on the list!

hmmmm, tough one. But of the ones I own...Anschutz 1700 Signature Classic .22LR, a .22-250 or Swift, or 6mm....Varmint rifle, a Browning FN .30-06 Olympia Grade, a Smith K-22 6 inch barrel, my Winchester 101 12 gauge with choke tubes, and a Kimber Concealed Carry .45. Had to leave out the accurized Ar-15 since the varmint rifle will do the same job for me and I would rent a big bore if I went where I needed it. Actually, laws aside, I could handle anything that walks with the above, just marginally in dangerous game cases.

Ohhhhhh, don't ask mean questions like that! Well, since if I could only own 5 guns I would be doing more hunting with than then shooting and fondling them.I'd take a nice quality 22 LR made by Anschutz or an origanal Winchester 75 Sporter;a good 222 Remington,a good 257 Roberts,a good 300 Weatherby and a good 45/70.I'd take the four centerfires all in Ruger #1s. Only five huh? First off I would consider myself immesurably deprived but here goes. .22 cal. Ruger MkII stainless bull barrel The above would allow me to do all the hunting I am probably ever going to do. Unless I really do get to Africa Hummm...maybe I ought to take that 06 out and......

Shoot, I was reading the lists again and recounted mine, ooops, listed 6. Hard as it is, of those I guess I would let the K-22 go. And, upon further reflection, I would choose a varmint rifle in 6mm that could do double duty as a deer type rifle as well. The problem is, no shooter needs less than 20 guns and 100 is more reasonable. Brian M: Thanks, in some ways I was lucky, bought the Olympia used and the previous owner had already banged up the stock, so I have no problems with using it for hunting. I have considered buying some more, but, as you said, they are pretty pricey for what they are.

These questions are always interesting here is my list. 1. Under & Over shotgun. 2. Remington VSSF 22/250 3. Ruger MK11 30/06 4. Marlin 1895SS 45/70 5. CZ 550 .416 Rigby I had great trouble in leaving my Hornet out of the list and I could not justify sacrificing a centerfire rifle for the inclusion of a rimfire, The shot gun with light shot would have to fill the role of the small game close range gun. The Hornet could have taken the shotguns spot but I just can't be without a shotgun and ferrets. The above I reckon would suffice for anything that I ever might wish to hunt. ------------------

Gatogordo, Funny you should say that, the previous owner who's estate I bought the Olympian 270 from use it to kill the Grand Slam of sheep.Suprisingly he kept it in very nice condition, but it is a salt gun and I am in the process of getting it restored. Olympians are VERY pricey now.A NIB one in the plain old 30/06 or 270 now runs around $3800.Anything desireable like a 222 or a 458 will run around $4500 on up.Get something real rare like a 257 Roberts or 284,and you get into the "name your own price" range. ------------------

PC: What are the gun laws like now "down under"? I didn't know they'd let you own magazine rifles anymore. Are there still plenty of opportunities for shooting in the outback?
|
One of Us |
fla3006, they have banned semi auto centerfire rifles, semi auto .22 rimfires and shotguns as well as pump action shotguns all thanks to one stinking knob jockey and his AR-15 .223 in Tasmania. Always the way one person completely stuffs it up and the law abiding who store there arms safely and have complied with registration etc. are the ones that pay the price. As for hunting in the outback yes there is still good "quantity" shooting to be had. Allthough things have become stricter since I first went outback at age 11. I usually head up twice a year and am looking to head away in April. Regards PC ------------------

Just five...Well, let's start with a couple of 22s - a Ruger Mark II and a Marlin 39 (yep, a 39, not a 39A). Down to three - a shotgun, for sure, a 6 lb., 16 ga side by side with enough shells to capture anything from clays to ringnecks. Two left, the big stuff: a .270, pre 64 M70, with loads from 100 to 160 gr. for most anything that barks, grunts or growls; and for those that grunt, stomp, snort and charge, a Browning Medalion .375 should punch their ticket. Sure would hate to leave that little Browning BLR, .284 behind tho'. Man, what a handy little rifle that is. And my Ruger Bisley, .45 Colt... That we should be so lucky. best...glenn

1) 7x57 in Mauser, for the class; 2) 308 in Rem 7, great fun gun; 3) 35 Whelen in Rem 700; 4) 45/70 in Ruger 1; 5) 416 Rem Mag in Rem 700. Now, 22's are not real "guns", right? Nor are shotguns real "guns", nor are pistols real "guns", nor blackpowder arms. Yeah, 5 could do it, by my accounting. ------------------

Every well rounded shot needs a 12 bore and a 22LR which leaves a big medium and small rifle. I'd take a 9.3x62, 6.5x55 and 222rem which is what I have. Then again I'm not well rounded so I'd borrow a 12 bore and keep my 7x57 and I'd download my 222rem and keep my 243.

What is really scary is that for some of the guys posting on this board a five gun limit or worse is reality. That doesn't even include the representative of Big Brother leaning over your shoulder counting the number or type of catridges you are allowed or deciding if you have given an "acceptable" reason for being able to have anything at all. Thank God for those ancestors of mine who generations ago had the good sense to pack up and come here.

Assuming I live somewhere that is huntable and ideally in the southern hemisphere. I would choose . . . 1) Colt 1911 Government in .45 acp #1 and #4 for self defense . . . #2 for self defense, small game and birds . . . #5 for medium sized plains game . . . and #3 for the big fun stuff while up close and personal.
